William E. Hinshaw, who, in 1895, was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his wife, was unconditionally paroled by Governor Durbin Monday just before his successor topk office. The papers reached Michigan City Tuesday, the tenth anniversary of the murder of Hinshaw’s wife. Governor Durbin made a formal statement giving his reasons for granting the parole, referring to the uncertainty and mystery surrounding the case from the very start. His action in the matter is generally condemned, a large majority of the people believing that Hinshaw was guilty of the murder. One day one of our subscribers wrote us a kick like this: “When my daughter puts new, clean newspapers on the pantry shelves, she runs across a story and stops her work to read it. If two women are putting down a carpet, they sit on the floor with their work waiting while they read the love stories in the papers that go under the carpet. This has lasted a long I was patient, but the other morning my wife'got up to light the fire. She found a love story in the paper she was rolling up to start the tire, and sat down to read it before applying the match. I think this is going too far. Unless you agree to keep the love stories out of your paper I may be compelled to get up and light the fire myself.”—Ex. Relative to the proposed further lowering of the Kankakee river the Momence Reporter says: It is presumed the ledge in question is the one in the river near the site of Simond’s old ice house, where the work of taking out the rock several years ago was left off. At that time the state of Indiana appropriated $40,000 for the removal of the rock in the river, and the contractor quit work when so many rods bad been removed, leaving a strip about twenty rods wide and extending across the river which holds some of the water above. There is some doubt in the minds of many whether the removal of this ledge will bring the required results, or whether it would be a better expenditure of money to strengthen the river in places. The windings of the stream holds the water back perhaps more in the flat, up-river districts than does the rock above this place.” Special discount on all lines of shoes at Rowles & Parker’s.
