Nelson First nn Ironworker. Battling Nelson, the featherweight fighter who conquered Young Corbett and recently met Jimmy Britt, makes his home at Hegewisch, 111. Nelson’s correct name Is Oscar Battlipg Matthew Nelson, so Battling is. not a mere complimentary title indicating fighting ability. The Dane was first brought to the attention of the fighting fraternity by
Jack Powell, pitcher of the New York Americans, who makes his home in SL Louis and who was less than two years ago manager and matchmaker for Nelson. Nelson was originally an ironworker. His family wanted him to continue at his trade, but the lad was certain that he could make much more money in the ring.
Sled Attachment For Bicycles. Sportsmen who are tired of skating can turn their attention to a newly invented device —a sled runner attachment for bicycles—designed so as to transform an ordinary bicycle into one that can be run on Ice or snow. It can be attached to any of the bicycle frames In common use and is adjustable to any size machine. The forward wheel and tire are displaced by a runner similar to a sled runner, while the rear portion also has a double runner. Fastened to the back wheel Is a tire having spaced spurs at suitable Intervals to engage the snow or ice, the tire being inflatable as in the ordinary bicycle. The spurs are alternately acute and obtuse in form, or each alternate spur being relatively sharp and dull. The sharper spurs will penetrate the snow and ice more readily and insure the requisite grip, while the duller spurs will prevent slipping. With a bicycle thus equipped a rider can travel over well beaten snow covered roads with great speed and ease and without jarring or concussion urising from any Irregularities In the surface traveled over.
Ormond Amto Barra Open to All. Considerable criticism having arisen regarding the plan of- closing of all events at the Ormoud-Dayton auto race meet In Florida and making entry by Invitation alone possible, it is now believed that this restriction will be removed nnd that all events from 1 to 100 miles at Ormond will be thrown open to the world. The question has arisen regarding the value of a championship title won in a close race, nnd this has caused a lot of talk. From Indications In the New York automobile district recently, when President Harlan W. Whipple, Secretary C. H. Gillette, C. G. Burgoyne. president of the Florida East Coast Automobile association, and a number of the more prominent competitors were seen together, it seems highly probable that the question of possessing an invitation to race at Ormond will not be raised at all and that any driver of any car will be able to drive that car In any event at Ormond. Hint* on Patting, Jack White, open golf champion of Great Britain, has just published a booklet entitled “The Art of Putting.’’ He says among other things: “In practicing putting I do not consider the large number of puts any one may hole as a test of Improvement. To learn how to strike the ball properly should be the one aim. In playing at a hole always pick out the most difficult angles. Do not try to do anything to the ball, but learn to make the putter head do all the work—that is to say, the putter head must come into the ball In advance of the wrists.” Cornell Needs a Pnnter. With the hope of developing a good punter Coach Warner of the Cornell football team has offered a medal and prise for the longest punt made in a punting contest to be held soon among the football teams. Coach Courtney of the Cornell crews h»a issued an order that none of the crew men shall play basket ball. A year ago Brandow, the crack freshman oarsman, bruised his knee and contracted blood poisoning while playing basket ball and was rendered permanently lame. Sold Maaaodaw. O. M.
