Bert Vandercar, the popular democratic assessor of Kankakee township, was in the city Thursday filing his official bond. Bert’s popularity is attested by the fact that he was re-elected at the late election by an increased majority over four years ago.
Elder D. T. Halstead, pastor of tbe Church of God, will occupy the pulpit at the Christian church next Sunday morning, and Rev. H. L. Kindig, of the M. E. church, will preach from the same pulpit in the evening, in the absence of the regular minister, J. M. Elam.
JWe have been having some quite snug winter nights this week, with the mercury 'registering close to the zero mark.. The ice on the river has become four or five inches thick and the young people and school children have been having great sport in skating every evening.

-X-Ellery Moorhead of Remington, Who went to Tracy, Minnesota with bis threshing outfit last August, returned home Monday. He says the wheat crop in that locality was very poor, thousands of acres not being worth cutting, therefore he did not find the threshing business very good. He stored his machine there and will go back next season again.
James C. Mitchell of Reynolds, inventor of the Mitchell smokeless powder, was terribly injured Wednesday morning at bis home while grinding some of the ingredients of his pcjwder. There was an explosion and his left hand and part of the forearm was torn off, his left eye put out and the right arm and hand badly injured. The front of the building was blown out and the rear windows shattered.
Bert Blew will sell at public auction at his residence 3$ miles northeast of Francesville, on the Benson farm, on Thursday, Dec. 22, 11 head of horses and mules, 29 head of Polled Angus cattle, several head of bogs, a full set of farming implements, household and kitchen furniture, etc. A credit of 10 months without interest on sums over $5. V. D. Clyne, auctioneer; Mr. Blew will move to near Hutchinson, ,Kan., immediately after his sale. E. Roy of Jordan township was in the city Wednesday on business. Mr. Roy sold his farm some time ago and was negotiating for a big tract of land in another part of the state but the latter deal fell through with and he expects to move to Enid, Okla., about Jan. 10th. He will reside in Enid for the present but will probably buy land near there if suited with thq country. Mr. Roy will have a big publio sale on Tuesday, Jan. 3, due notice of which, will appear in this paper next week.
