Old Town Is Trying to Get a Hustle On—President Stone on Tank Scraps—State News.
Indianapolis, Sept. 23. lndianapolis Day at the Louisiana Purchase exposition in St, Louis on Oct 5 is to be one of the most distinctive celebrations at the fair. Only a half a dozen cities have been honored by the management with special days, and the city administration and the Commercial club, appreciating this courtesy, have determined that every effort shall be exerted to make a good impression and to obtain all of thendVertlsing possible for Indianapolis on that occasion. Mayor Holtzman urges the people of tin- city to do their share toward making the celebration a success. W. It. Williams is secretary of the city organization. Programme To 110 Arranged. A programme will lie arranged, and the speaking will probably take place in the Indiana'building in tin* evening. Judge Jesse A. McDonald, of St. Louis, will lie invited to make the principal address. He is an Indianian by birth, and a prominent member of the St. Louis-lndiana association. President Francis, of the Louisiana Purchase exposition, will deliver the address of welcome, and Mayor Holtzman and Governor Durbin will be on the programme for responses. Itinerary of the Trip. 'file excursion train will leave here at 7:30 a. m. on Oct. 4 and the day will be spent traveling through Indiana and Illinois. Thirty-minute stops will J*e made at Terre Haute, Paris. Khelbyville, Mattoon. Pana and other cities. Wednesday, Oct. 5. Indianapolis Day, will be spent in St. Louis. Thursday morning the return trip will begin. The train will stop at Springfield, Decatur, Tuscola. Montezuma and Dana. TANK SCRAP IS CONDEMNED President Stone, of Purdue, Sound* Warning: to the Students Against Their Brutality in the Fight. Lafayette, Ind., Sept. 23,—President Stone, of Purdue university, has sounded a warning to Purdue students, and outlined the abuses to which the traditional “tank scrap” lias led. Preceding an athletic mass meeting in Fowler hall Dr. stone spoke for ten minutes to flic students upon the subject of the recent tank’ “scrap.” lie recounted the start of the* annual ‘scrap” nine years ago, and how it hod been developed from a harmless class affair to a dangerous, harmful battle of hundreds, affording a degrading spot facie lor the public to witness. After the speech, which was heard by almost the entire student body. President Stone selected a joint committee representing the four classes to take the matter of future tank “scraps" under consideration.
Kecovera from a Krain Wound. Anderson, Ind., Sept. 23. Although one of the tines of a pitchfork penetrated his skull just above the ear and protruded through his palate, Matthew McKinley, 0 years old, son of Mr. and Mrs. Asa McKinley, living near this city, is recovering, and physicians believe that the wound will heal rapidly. The hoy concealed himself under hay in a barn and his brother, not knowing it, drove the pitchfork into the lad's head while tolling the hay to horses. Their Corn in Bad Shape. Cambridge City. Ind., 23. —The condition of com- in this county is giving the farmers worry. It is blown down and twisted by the wind, which makes it almost impossible to cut it, and that which can be cut will make a great deal of hard work. The cutter will tirst have to untwist the stalk* and then pull some of them up in order to get into all the corn. Indictment for the McCoys. Rensselaer, Ind., Sept. 23. The Jasper county grand jury has returned twenty joint indictments charging Alfred McCoy and Thomas J. McCoy, of the defunct McCoy bank, of this'city, with embezzlement. Warrants were served and the defendants arraigned In court. Each of the defendants was released on bonds of S3OO on each count. Strike Is Declared Oft Terre Haute, Ind., Sept. 23.—The rational officers of the Car Workers* union have declared off the strike at the Terre Haute branch of the American Car and Foundry company, and there was a general jollification on ’both sides. The strike has been on for many months. Defends Himself Successfully. Frankfort, Ind., Sept. 23. Asa H. Boulden. city attorney-cleat, has won his fight against "removal from office on a charge of being intoxicated. The city council sustained a motion to dismiss the charges against Boulden, who conducted his own defense. Crushed Under a Wagon. Washington, Ind., Sept. 23. —Thomas Mefedith. a blacksmith, 70 years old, was caught beneath the bed of a wagon and severely crushed. He Is la a 6erious condition. ,
