Dr. Besser has a new automobile. Joe Fagot was in Chicago last week on business. Well, Beasley, Ellis scored the first touchdown. The Gray hitch barn has been treated to a fresh coat of paint. C. A. Balcom has a fine new steam peanut roaster and corn popper. O. N. Chamberlain of Pontiac, 111., is the guest of his daughter, Mrs. H. Landon. \ C. H. Peck attended a big shooting tournament at Cincinnati, Ohio, last week. Frank Lucas and Sam Guy left last week for Minnesota to work in the harvest and threshing there. Miss Anna Gleitz of Logansport is visiting here with her sister, Mrs. Dennis O’Connor, at this writing. The democratic township convention, to have been held last Saturday, was postponed until Saturday, August 13. Miss Nora Leavel returned to her home in Wabash county last week after an extended visit with her sister Mrs. Clyde Reeve.
Beveral new cottages are being erected at Fountain Park this season and the grounds being put in shape for the assembly which opens Aug, 13. Recent births: To Mr, and Mrs. George Worden, July 16, a daughter; to Mr. and Mrs. Ellis Jones, July 19, a son; to Mr. and Mrs. A Beasley, July 20, a son. It is reported that George Mitten will leave Wadena, the town where he has had so much bad financial luck, and engage in the mercantile business in Goodland. The Wolcott Enterprise states that Mrs. Nate Reed is thinking of closing out her millinery store at that place and moving to Wabash to engage in the millinery business there. Mrs. Robert Parker and daughter, Mrs. Hartley Church, visited Mrs. John Berger at Huntington, Ind., last week. Mrs. Church will go from there to Bt. Louis to take in the fair, and thence return to her home in Lajunta, Cali. “Goshtn, Ind., July 23. —General Edwin R. Niles, who has been missing, from Long-Cliff Asylum, was this morning captured at the home of his sister, in Chicago, where be. had been for two weeks. Superintendent Rogers, of Long-Cliff is awaiting a requisition order from Governor Durbin to return Niles, who refuses to come back, and who is sustained in that refusal by his sister.” Niles spent Sunday with Scott Russell, west of town, when on his way from Logansport in making his escape, but Mr. Russell did not then know that he was escaped from an asylum, and he showed no signs of being insane. He told Russell he was going to Chicago.

We are having some cooler weather. Oats cutting is all the go nowadays in this vicinity. John Hellengreen of Independence did business in Rensselaer Monday. Roy, Bluford and Flossie Torbet attended church at Aix Sunday night. Frank Hayes’spent Sunday and Sunday night with their daughter, Mrs. Will Florence, of Rosebud. Alma Hellengreen and Emma Nelson of Indianapolis are spending a few days with friends in McCoysburg. Will Opechain and family of Gifford, spent Saturday night and Sunday with Will Nuss and family of Independence. Mr. and Mrs. Doc Herrick and son Jessie, of Frankfort, are spending two weeks with relatives and friends in Barkley. Hanna and Willis Robey of Pleasant Ridge, were back Saturday and Sunday visiting their old friends around Independence. James Torbet and family of Blackford spent Saturday night and Sunday with their daughter, Mrs. Cratie Cragun and family of McCoysburg. Those that took dinner with Misses Belle and Maude Walker of Valma Sunday: Walter Daniels and Miss Tennie Nuss, Fleet Lakins and Miss Janie McCleary, Roy, Bluford, Maggie and Flossie Torbet of Independence, and Miss Ethel Walker of Center. All report a fine time.

The dry June weather caused the potato cron to be few in the hill. Mrs. £. S. Thornton is able to sit up now, after ten days' sickness. Mrs. Simon Kenton and Aunt Looiza Thornton attended church at Mt, Ayr Sunday. John Younglas has two threshing machines this year, and a thousand acres of grain contracted thus far to thresh.
John Karr went over southeast of Rensselaer to look at the prospects on a farm he owns there, and thinks the prospects are quite good for corn. Jim Polonda received a pair of cats from Chicago of the tiger kind. We did not learn whether he was going to enter the campaign for high diving or not. About thirty young friends of Miss Lena Lang gathered at V. H. Thornton's last Satuiday evening and all had a fine time. Ice cream, fruits and cake were served. It was quite a surprise in our town to hear of the sudden death of David Crow, which occurred Sunday at the Swaney Makeever larm. He had long been troubled with an ailment to one of his limbs, a gradual disintegration of the bone, and Saturday the leg broke of his own weight. Doctors were summoned and it was found that amputation would be necessary. The limb was removed near the thigh, but the shock was too much for him and he died soon after the operation. Deceased was fifty-one years of age. The remains were taken back to his old home in Ohio for interment.

Oats cutting is in full blast. A nice shower of rain fell Tuesday. Earl Leech visited at Myers’ Sunday. Mr. Swaim’s called on Kenton’s Sunday.
Edward Casey purchased him a new buggy. Mrs. Moore of Chicago, is visiting Mrs. Paul Weging this week. Stella Marion attended church at Brushwood Sunday night. It seems as though young people have a time over their sweethearts. Arthur , and Korah -—, made their usual calls Sunday afternoon. Miss Myrtle Gillmore was the guest of her cousin, Miss Mary Potts, Sunday. V’ictor Comer, who has been attending Normal at Valpo., came home Saturday. Several from this vicinity attended the dance at Edward Lakin’s Saturday night. Cad Caldwell and Ross Ropp were visiting in this locality Saturday and Sunday. W r onder what makes Jess Garriott look so down-hearted? Orpha isn’t gone.

Everybody is cutting oats this week. Tom Mallatt’s new barn was completed tie first of the week. Leatider Kesler and wife transacted business in Rensselaer Friday. Isaac Best of Roselatyn, transacted business here Tuesday. Abe Bringle took dinner with Neen Littlefield at Rensselaer, Sunday. Otto Cedarwall made a flying trip to Chicago Sunday to see his brother. Joe Davison and family of near Kniman, visited relatives here Sunday, G. J. Thomas and wife took dinner with Chestir Sutton’s, in the country, Sunday, The pickle harvest begun here the first of the week, Frank Goff made the first delivery. There was another big dance at Lakin’s barn Saturday eve. Everybody had a fine time. The Western Union men are at work putting in new telegraph poles along here now, on the Monon. Ike Eight attended the trotting race at Aurora, 111., last week. His son John’s maie was one in the race. Mrs. James Clifton, after a few days visit with Arthur Powell’s family, on the Kent Ranch, returned home Sunday. Mrs. Hattie Kesler and Mrs. Fannie Cottingham went to the Kankakee, fishing, Friday. The former caught two nice fish, but the latter got a waterhaul. The most interesting game of ball of the season in these parts took place here last Sunday between Mt. Ayr and Wheatfield, resulting in a victory of one score for Mt. Ayr.

Oats cutting is in progress. Elwood Davis is working for Marion Sands. Peter Behles is erecting a new barn on his farm North of D. V. Quite a few of our people went to Michigan City last Sunday. Willis Zart of Hebron, visited with your correspondent Sunday and Monday. Our livery men are doing a hustling business. The teams are going all of the time. Earl Pfeil and Miss Jones of Shelby were buggy riding in our vicinity last Sunday. Joseph Hilliard, who is attending school at Valpo., visited in this vicinity Saturday and Sunday. There will be a dance at the Triechel hall to-night. All are invited to attend and participate in the exercises.
Omar Wilmington and your cor. took a drive through Walker and Kankakee townships last Sunday afternoon. We think it is mean of a youug lady to board up her photos instead of presenting them to her friends. Be good. George and Clara Hoehn, accompanied by two sisters from Kankakee City, were guests at the Fisher residence last Sunday. i The ball game in Walker between the Walker and D. V. nines, resulted in a victory for the former, at the rate of 15 to 23, The next time that Mr. Pierce of Kouts wishes to race with Mr. Shirer of D. V., he should bring along a horse that can run. Mrs. Williams and daughter Emma of San Pierre, visited with Mr. and Mrs. J. Vandercar and family a few days the first of the week. Say, have you been at Dunn’s Bridge this year? If not, you are missing a good time. Dunn's Bridge is getting to be a famous summer resort. The League next Sunday evening will be led by Miss Irene Frazier. Let all come out and help by your presence to make the League a grand snccess. Mr. and Mrs. Schrader are improving their residence by erecting a new porch on the west end. Mr. Claspell, one of our carpenters, is doing the work. Mathias Behles, who has been working in Chicago for the past two months, is home now doctoring a crippled leg. Mr. Behles is an expert boiler maker. Collins and Will, our hustling threshing machine men, have begun to thresh. Judging by the amount of oats in the country, they will be busy for the next tew weeks. Quite a few of the young folks of Walker and Kankakee townships called on the Sister Jasperson last Sunday afternoon, and hela a song and conversational carnival.

Michael Stibbie made a flying trip to Parr Monday. A barn dance was given at Ed Lakin’s Saturday night. Chris Schultz was seen on the streets of Parr Tuesday. Mr. and Mrs. Ritter were visiting at Paul Schultz's Sunday. Ernest Stibbie is helping his uncle, John Stibbie, put up bay this week. Mrs. Amel Herrie, of Newton county, was visiting at her parents' Sunday. Well, boys, you had better gather up the cow bell and shotguns for they may come handy.

Robertson of Wolcott attended church at this place Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. John Clark from Lee, attended church here Sunday. Fred May and Bell Clark attended church at Lee Sunday evening. W. C. Huston and son Ray, were Wolcott goers last Friday evening. Mrs. Grounds and children of Chicago, are visiting with Mrs. Elmer Clark. Mrs. Frank Coghill visited this week with her sister, Mrs. James Blakemore. John Johnson and Fred Phillips of Lee, attended church here Sunday night. Messrs. Edward and Harry Cook spent Sunday afternoon with Glen Huston, Miss Nina Martindale, who has been visiting Mabel Huston, returned home Monday. Frank Sommers, who is working away from home, spent last Sabbath with bis mother. Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Foulks attended preaching services at Blackoak last Sunday afternoon. Clyde and Martha Clark spent Saturday night with their cousins, Charles and Etta McCashen. Mrs. Nellie Lansing and sisters Laura and Maggie Barlow, spent Sunday with the Coleman family. Dennis Casto and wife of |Rensselaer are visiting with their grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Larsb. Mr. and Mrs. Ellis of Lafayette, are visiting the latter's parents. Mr. and Mrs. Coleman for some days. Misses Clara Parker, Harriet Sayler and Nina Martindale from Rensselaer, spent Srnday with Mabel Huston. Cady Underwood and wife, Dan Chatman and mother, Mabel Coghill and Mrt. Jake McDonald spent Saturday after* noon in McCoysburg.
Stephen Larsb, whose serious condition has been mentioned before, is not much if any better, at this writing. Elsie Kendall of Goodland, who has been visiting friends and relatives here for some time, returned home this week. Rev. Morrow, U. S. Dobbins, Jacob Johns and wife, M. C. Huston and wife, and D. R. Benson and wife took dinner with Peter Foulks' last Sunday. The Republicans held their convention last Saturday at Center, nominating G. L. Parks for trustee, G. W. Foulks for assessor, W. Barlow fdr justice of the peace and Wm. Renie for constable. Preaching services last Sabbath morning and evening were well attended, and in two weeks, the next preaching day, we will have some special music, both morning and evening. Come, everybody invited.

Everybody busy cutting oats. Miss Katherine Michael is home at present. John Sayers and family spent Sunday at Michaels'. Willie, you’d better take the family cariiage next time. Mrs. John Kelley and children spent Sunday at G. D. Gaunt's. If at first you don’t succeed, try, try, again, is what Louie thinks. Miss Nora Casey called on her uncle, Tom Rted, Sunday evening. Arthur Putt has sf fine new rubber-tire buggy. Nannie, see what you missed. Mrs. James Bullis and daughter Nettie, were Rensselaer callers Wednesday. Mr. “Hop” Keen of Goodland spent Saturday and Sunday with his son Nate Keen. Mrs, Clara Baker of Wolcott, is visiting her sister, Mrs. Joe Eldridge, this week. The dance at Hank Timmons’ last Friday night was not very largely attended. Ord Yeoman and wife attended the Golden wedding, at Grandpa Murray’s in Barkley tp. Sunday. Several from this vicinity attended the ball game Sunday, which was a defeat for Goodland, Hurrah!

Prof. E. Neier was a Dunnville caller F riday. Miss Emma Miller spent Sunday at Kniman. Granny Neier visited with Mrs. P. Smith Sunday. G. H. Comer, of Asphaltum, was here during the week. Miss Mae Pettit, of Laura, was in our vicinity Saturday. Geo. Hoehn was through our vicinity Monday buying calves. Miss Clara Keene spent Friday with her sister, Mrs. Love Asher. Lilly and Henry Karch visited with their sister at Valpo. Saturday and Sunday. Butler Asher and Miss Bessie Lockwood were guests of Miss Florence Neier Sunday. Thomas Callaghan and daughter Margaret, of Walker Center, were in Lonely Valley Saturday.
Miss Clara Miller returned to her work in Chicago Friday after a four weeks’ visit with her parents at this place. We noticed in Gillam's items of last week the advertisement: “Wanted, a beau.” Now, Gillam, send that lady to Lonely Valley, as there are plenty of bachelors here, and if they will not do, please call on Henry.

Miss Ethel Fisher was the guest of Miss Carrie Jasperson Wednesday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. Jacobson were guests of Mrs. C. Jasperson and family Sunday evening. Lewie Grube of near Stoutsburg, attended the dance at Ed. Wesner’s Saturday night, Mr. and Mrs. Otto Schrader of Dunnville, spent Sunday with the former’s mother. Bert Vandercar and Omar Wilmington of D. V., called on friends in this vicinity Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Wesner Sundayed with their son. Cass Wesner, and family of near Stoutsburg. Mft. Geo. Laßerge and son Paul of Valparaiso, visited with Joseph Laßerge and family the last of the week. Mrs. Ed Brown and Mrs. W. Radke of Valparaiso visited with their parents Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Reinhertz last week. Mrs. H. Peterson and daughters Hazel and Marguerite, and Miss Sena Jasperson were guests of Mrs. Geo. wesner Tuesday afternoon. The D. V. boys, in their glee, came out last Sunday in their new uniforms and crossed bats with the Walker boys. Score 15 to 23 in favor of Walker, The dance at Ed Wesner’s Saturday night was a grand success in every way. Excellent music was furnished by Wesner, Scbreiber and Neier. All report a fine time,

Mr. Shake of Wichita, Kan., will superintend the building of Will Helmick’s house. The Maroons plaved the Mt. Ayr bovs at Fair Oaks Sunday, and lost the game. Score 5 to 6. Mr. and Mrs. John Grube and daughter Pauline of Stoutsberg, visited Sunday with Will Grube and family. Mrs. Hattie Ludlow and daughter of Owen county, who have been visiting with Mr. and Mrs. Frank Scott, returned home Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. Gene Jackson returned to their home in Englewood Monday, after a fortnight’s visit with the former’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ira Jackson.

Christena Flock was the guest of Lura Yeoman Monday afternoon. Sadie, be careful with your hat the next time you go to a picnic. Mrs. Stevens of Foresman visited Mrs. T. Lamson a few days last week.
Miss Ona Sbindler is taking music lessons of Mrs. Martin of Mt. Ayr. Mr. and Mrs. James A. Powell visited their son Fred, near Monon, from Friday until Sunday, Little Albert Tebo who had his hand hurt in a pulley, is getting along nicely at this writing. O. O. Hammerton and Miss Myrtle Tullis were guests of Miss Christena Floch Sunday evening. The little children of this vicinity had a picnic Wednesday which was held in Mr. Brusuahan’s woods. Mrs. Shipman and daughter Mildred visited her daughter, Mrs. E. Smith, near Rensselaer a few days ago.

Miss Ethel Walker visited her aunt, Miss Belle Walker, Sunday. Roy Ropp, who was overcome bv heat Monday noon, is better at this writing. Miss Viola Reed and Custer Baker attended church at Gifford Sunday night. Agnes Potts and Glenn Baker were the guests of Viola and Harry Reed Sunday. Miss Mvrtle Richmond of Pleasant Grove called on Miss Odem Sunday afternoon. Simeon, Clifford and Morton Wells visited their sister, Mrs, Dan Robinson at Winamac, Saturday and Sunday. Rev. Ferticb, pastor of the M. E. Barkley church, delivered a very able sermon at Center school house Sunday afternoon. Those that took dinner with John Marlatt’s Sunday, were: Mr. and Mrs, J, L. Nichols, Mesdamas Michaels, Wm. Snedeker and James Snedeker. Miss Center Barkley substitute, B— — wishes to thank you very much for informing the public of her looking down her nose, but how do you expect her to look up her nose?
