Government engineers Surveying a Line Through West Side of Starke County. Starke County Democrat: E. Johnson and E. W T . Hanna of Chicago, government engineers, are in this county this week on an errand that may prove of deep local interest later on. Tuesday they made a careful examination of the records in the surveyer’s office, particularly those relating to the Stauffer and Burbank ditches in the west side of the county, They will run a line, perhaps several Hues, from the Kankakee river to the Tippecanoe, to learn the elevation between the two streams. While very courteous and affable the gentlemen were unwilling when seen Tuesday to be quoted at all as to the final object of the investigations. There is no question, however, that it has reference to a plan to connect the Kankakee and Tippecanoe and on to the Wabash, Ohio, Mississippi and finally into the Gulf of Mexico. The plan has a double purpose — to drain the land along the Kankakee and to furnish a larger volume of water for power in the Tippecanoe. Mr. Johnson was here about a year ago. The line they are now running leaves the Kankakee at or near English Lake and runs in a sooth easterly direction, striking the Tippecanoe near Winamac. It is not believed that any very deep cutting, or serious obstacles of any kind would be encountered, and the plan may be carried out. It wonld undoubtedly be an effectual way to drain the Kankakee valley.
