Albert Dickinsrn wa* in Rensselaer on business Thursday. Attorney Guy was in Rensselaer on business Wednesday. Dr. Landon and family returned home last week from their visit to Pullman, Ok la. * Will Kirk returned last week to El Reno after a few weeks visit with relatives here. Don Price of Middlesboro, Ky., is visiting his parents Mr. and Mrs. Chas. H. Price here, at this writing. Mrs. Frank Philippi, Henry Mischer, T. H. Whitehead and Thomas Mullen were Rensselaer visitors Tuesday. Rev. Whitney and Misses Ida Beal, Pearl Powell and Louise Hartman attended the C. E. convention at Ft. Wayne last week. George Cummons has been awarded the contract for building the new school house at No. 7, Carpenter township. Price SB6O. Mrs. Elizabeth Peck who has been sick for some time, died Wednesday. She leaves five sons and one daughter. The funeral was held Friday at 2 p. m. No trace has been had of Banker Gilman of Goodland nor of Sumner, the Fowler rapist. It is thought by some that the officers have secured tne latter bui are keeping the fact from the public for fear of mob violence. George Mitten, the Wadena merchant who lost his store by fire recently and who later lost the insurance money in the Gilman bank at Goodland, has gone into bankruptcy, forced there by the failure of Gilman’s bank. Rev. Postil, Ira Rinker, Miss Emroy Stiller and Miss Daisy Luckey were delegates to the Epworth League convention at Rensselaer Mpnday and Tuesday. Altogether there was over twenty from here who attended the convention. The Remington Press (neutral?) says the "Roosevelt and Fairbanks will carry the Republican standard to victory this fall." Maybe. But is the above a "neutral" opinion or a partisan republican opinion? One would hardly expect the editor of a "neutral" naper to publish so partisan a statement.

Henry Platt is rejoicing over a new boy. William Muffley is helping load piling this week. Earl Pierce went to Wheatfield Sunday evening. James Clark, who was very sick last week, is much better. William Mutchler’s guest from Valparaiso returned home Suuday. John Sims has recovered from his severe attack of typhoid fever. Earl Snick and cousin, Evert Myers were over from Hebron Sunday. James King and lames Clark planted a large field of buckwheat this week. The Bush family and William Mutchler spent Sunday evening with the Clark family. Quite a crowd of people from the prairie enjoyed themselves at the Monday. Miss Etta Clark apd Wm. Mutchler took supper with the Bush family Sunday evening. Misses Marie Watson and Julia Noakes called on Gertie Clark Sunday afternoon. As Wm. Mutchler buried a broom handle last week, he will soon have plants for sale. Let everyone come to Wheatfield Monday and help to celebrate the Fourth of July like patriotic Americans. Come to Wheatfield to church Sunday, July io, as Rev. Marshall will conduct service in the morning and evening. We understand there is to be about seventy men at work getting out ties on the Phelps ranch in about a week.

Henry Phillips, of Momence, was the guest of Miss Manda Funk Sunday. Lewis Paulsen and wife spent Sunday with Miss Clara Hoehn, southeast of town. Frabk Lewis and wife, of Kersey, visvisited Sunday with Simon Fendig and wife. Mr. and Mrs. Armstrong and daughter. of Chicago, are visiting the latter’s sistei, Mrs. Dr. Zeuch. Frank Clark and sisters, Rosa and May, spent Sanday with their sister at Niles, Michigan. Miss Elva East went to Michigan City Saturday, to attend the funeral of her aunt. Mrs. Wm, Hibbs. Ward Hamilton and wife, Wm. Mann and wife and son Russell, called upon Kankakee friends Sunday. Misses Manda and Flora Funk and Beatrice Langdon wrote 011 the teachers’ examination at Rensselaer Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. George Mechjing and children, of Walkerton, Ind., visited Sunday with Arthur Mechling and family. Ask the Kersey boys that play in their base ball team whether the Wheatfield kids can make a game of base ball interesting for them? Messrs. John Pinter, John Tilton, Jr., Newt. Byers and J. P. Hammond attended the republican convention at Rensselaer Saturday. Mrs. Ida Brown and son visited a few days the first of the week with her sister, Mrs. Mattie Holle, and her mothjtr-in-law, Mrs. Brown, at Kniman. Two very interesting ball games were played here Sunday. In the first game, between the Wheatfield Juniors ana Kersey boys, the Juniors came out triumphant. Score, 9to 6. In the second game the Maroons beat the Shelby lads 18 to 6. Misses Mary Lidtke, Nettie Gilbranson, and Messrs. Earl Pierce, Ambrose Hendrickson, Sue Pinter, Melvin Hendrickson, Wm. Wiese, John McGlinn and wife ana Mrs. John McGlinn, Sr., attended Wallace Bros, show at Valpo, Monday.

Omar and Bill Wilmington were Valpo callers Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. David Miller called on Mr. and Mrs. Jessie Wilmington Saturday. Quite a few of our D. V. people attended the Bohemian picnic at North Judson Sunday. Mr. Durflinger has taken a hay contract on the Morris Ranch. He expects to begin July 6. Messers Aaron Timmons and Elwood Davis attended the M. W, A. lodge at Wheatfield Monday eve. Jack Smith and Miss Biggs of Wheatfield attended League at D. V, Sunday evening. Come again. Let’s all come out to League and help make it a success. So far there has been a good attendance and a good program. The meeting Sunday evening was led by Miss Emma Will. Lext Sunday evening it will be led by Miss Irene Frazier.

The strawberry crop is about harvested around here. We are needing rain very badly in our neck of the woods at this writing. Everybody is coming to Fair Oaks the Fourth. It is the place to come to have a good time. We have been informed that the Parr ball mne will cross bats here with Fair Oaks nine Sunday. The Interlock Switch Co. have a gang of men at work here this week, overhauling their switch. lames Clifton went down west of Rensselaer to do some carpenter work for Uncle John Jenkinson. Mrs. Cottingham returned home Monday from her two weeks’ visit with friends and relatives at Reynolds and Brook ston. Mrs. Charley Halleck took her son James, who has been in poor health all spring, to Lowell Friday for medical treatment. Mrs. Shepherd, who has been visiting friends and relatives here and in Chicago the past two months, returned to her home Wednesday, near Sandy Hook, New Jersey. G.J. Thomas’, Abe Bringle and family, T. J. Joiner and family, atttended the graduating exercises at Rosebud Saturday evening. They had a nice class of eleven graduates. Indus Wiseman, of Aix, was awarded first place, and Fern Alers, of Rosebud, second; Arvel Bringle, of Fair Oaks, third.

Schultz was visiting at Klinskey’s Sunday. Herman Schultz was home on a visit Sunday. B. W. called on Henry Bronkey Saturday night.
Bertha and Ed attended the dance at Lane’s Saturday nigtjt. j John Stibbie and wife were visiting on Dividing Ridge Sunday. Oscar Stibbie and Fred Kruger made a dying trip to Parr Sunday. Adolph Schultz and family were visiting at Chris. Schultz's Sunday. Mrs. George Davison was visiting at Goodland a lew days last week. Michael Stibbie and wife were visiting at Roland Leas' in Barkley tp. Sunday. Henry Bronkey has bought a fast horse and will put him in the race on the 4th. A couple of young gentlemen of Milwaukee, Wis., are visiting at Chris. Schultz’s this week. A couple of young ladies made a flying trip to Parr after their mail Sunday evening, but “he" wasn't there. Paul and Amel Schultz and A. D. Admans. of Fowler, Ind., were fishing at the river Thursday and Friday of last week, and got a fine lot of fish.

Pleasant. Hello, there, Walter, we suppose all the girls eyes are sore looking at that new buggy. Elias Arnold has bought the old cozy Palace school house and is preparing to build a new one. May and Len Hayes of Blackford spent Saturday night and Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Bill Florence, of Rosebud. John and Chloae Torbet, Harry and Emma Hellengreen and John Daniels spent Sunday with Bertha and Simon Cooper. James Torbet, wife,son and daughter, Charley and Creola.and George Daniels, wife and son Ira, spent Sunday with Hugh Gaffey and wife near Wheatfield. Those that took dinner Sunday with Bud Lewis and wife of Valma were, Flossie, Maggie, Bluford and Ray Torbet, S. H. David Wesner took dinner with Messers John and Herman Burget Sunday. Wm. Jasperson and sister Carrie, were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Wesner of Gillam Sunday. A few from this vicinity attended the dance given at Mr. and Mrs. Henry Pfiel’s Saturday night. All report a good time.

There was some millet sown here this week. G. L. Thornton is*Building an addition to his house. H. Zacher and family had visitors from Lafayette last week. Mr. and Mrs. Greenlee, of Rosebud, called on C. L. Parks and family Sunday. Many of the young folk attended children’s day exercises at Rosebud Sunday evening. Guss Yeoman was up looking over the prospects on his farm, and finds a fair show for corn. Henry Wapplehorst and two children, of Coldwater, Ohio, are making the Yunglas family a visit this week. Charles Parks and wife attended tent meetings Saturday and Sunday at Foresman. The meeting is to continue till after the Fourth.

Hurrah for Gillam. Corn is looking good in this part of the country. Gillam was visited by a terriffic storm Saturday. Don’t forget the Picnic in the grove, the fourth. Epworth League was well attended last Sunday night at Gillam. Davy Rathfon, who has been sick for some time, is reported no better. Mrs. James Blankenship and Miss EffieOdem did shopping in Medaryville Tuesday. A 4th of July celebration, Sunday school picnic, Children's day exercises and basket dinner combined will be held in the grove at Gillam church the 4th at 10:30 ny Rev. Fertich and Rogers; dinner at 12, Childrens exercises at 2:30. There will be special music by the Gillam choir and others, also a well prepared program by the committee. Everything is heing done to make it entertaining and a success, we therefore cordially invite everybody to attend. Refreshments of alt kinds on the ground. Come one, Ccme all. Committee.

Garrett Snedeker and wife called on James Snedeker and wife Sunday afternoon. The store and blacksmith shop at Valma burned Monday night. Origin of fire not known. Mrs. J. L. Nichols and Mrs. Michaels visited at Wm. Cooper’s Saturday night and Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Horatio Ropp and daughter, Mrs. Garry Snedeker, visited John Pullin’s, Thursday. Mesdames Ropp and Wells called on Mrs. Noland Sunday afternoon,she being very low with consumption. Say, , the next time you give two two fellows the slip you bad better stick sticks up along the road so they will know which way to go. Miss Ethel Sage, who has been staying with John Marlatt’s for some time, returned to her home near Laura Sunday. Miss Sage expects to go to Illinois for an extended visit with friends. A very pleasant surprise birthday party was given at the home ot Mr. and Mcs. Horatio Ropp Tuesday evening, June 28, the occaision being in honor of their son Roy, it being his sixteenth birthday anniversary. After enjoying themselves at many games they all partook of a bountiful supper of ice cream and cake. Chas. McCashen and sister Etta were in Monon Saturday afternoon. Mrs. Frank May visited with her uncle, Z. J. McCashen and family Tuesday. Miss Jessie Southard, of near Guernsy, is visiting old friends here for a few days. Jos. Clark and wife spent Wednesday afternoon with the latter’s sister, Mrs. George Foulks. Ray and Mabel Houston and Jessie Southard attended the festival at Lee Saturday evening. Children’s day exercises were observed Sunday evening. A large and attentive audience was present. Rev. A fine rain in this locality Saturday. Also on Wednesday of this week. John Petery and Carrie Ringhisen were Rensselaer callers last week. Miss Jessie Boutherd of near Monticello, called on the hotel lady Tuesday. J. R. Philipps and family entertained visitois from Rensselaer this week. J. P. Gwin and the Liveryman were out distributing mail boxes this week. A. Nicholson was in our vicinity Sunday. Wonder what’s the attraction. L. W. Goodyear of Rensselaer was in our burg Wednesday, shaking hands with oid friends. Children’s day was observed Sunday eve at the Milroy church,' with several from McCoysburg in attendance. Scott Robinson is erecting a station at the junction of the C. I. & L. and the C. \V. & V., we understand for transfer facilities between the two roads.

John Mitchel lost a fine cow the otbe r day. We had a real heavy rain in this vicinity Saturday. Judson Adams and wife visited Nelson McCoy’s Sunday. James Bui lis and daughter were Rensselaer callers Monday. Joe Eldridge and brother ground feed at W. T. Michael's Monday. Nate Keen and family took supper at James Bullis’ Sunday evening. Some of our young folks went to the carnival. Hope they had a good time. Miss Nora Casey spent Sunday with Miss Lizzie Liters, southeast of Rensselaer. Misses Allie and Tena Dluzak and Katherine Michael called on Nora Casey Monday afternoon. Mort Murry of Rensselaer, spent Saturday night and Sunday with his sister,Mrs. Ord Yeoman. Wanted, a little more sunshine. Wallace Miller, who has been ill for the past four weeks, is better at this writing. The ice cream social at the M. E. church was quite a success Saturday evening. Miss Mabel Ferticb, of this place, gives Miss Katie Arnold, at Cozy Palace. music lessons every week. Mrs. Houghbaum and two children of Chicago, were here visiting her niece, Mrs. Charles Hopkins last week. Misses Lizzie a Mary Schulz and Dan Hopkins and Charley Hill, pf Gifford, attended children’s day exercises at Rosebud Sunday evening. Misses Lizzie and Mary Schulz, of Wabash county, who have been visiting friends and relatives here for the past three weeks, will return home next week. Mr. Renicker, wife and little grandson, of Carroll county, L. S. Renicker and family, John Renicker and family, S. H. Hopkins and family, C. M. Hopkins and family, Harvey Miller and wife, Misses Lizzie and Mary Schulz, Maggie and Flossie Torbit, Ruby Gratner, Messrs. Edward Cromer, John Hill, Charlie Neauman, Blueford and Ray Torbet, spent Sunday last with Bud Lewis and wife. The Valma store building with the entire stock of goods, and the Tanner blacksmith shop near by, was destroyed by fire at 2:30 Tuesday morning. The fire was first discovered by T. J. Richardson, living across the road, who was awakened by dull sounds resembling an explosion. He investigated the Tight that appeared on his windows and found the store on fire. When first seen the fire had not burned through the roof. Mr. Richardson and son-in-law, John Hayes, immediately repaired to «the scene but nothing could be done to save the building or the goods. A few things were taken from the blacksmith shop before it was consumed. Levi Miller owned the store building, Wm. Burns the stock of goods, and Mrs. James Lewis the blacksmith shop. A watch found in the ashes oi the store had stopped at 2:25 a. m. The origin of the fire is unknown. , Subscribe for The Democrat.
