A Picture of Browning.
it ti «ald that when Robert Browning waa an Infant hi* father would and him to sleep by humming odea of Anacreon and that he taught the boy the word* he wished him to remember by joining them to a grotesque rhyme. Perhaps this last mental exercise had something to do with the poet’s exasperating style. Misa Corkrnn records thus her first ehildiah impressions of Browning: “I had pictured to myself poets as ethereal beings. It gave me a shock to see Mr. Browning eat with avidity so much bread’ and butter and big slices of cake. He never uttered a word that in nuy way suggested a poetical thought. His ecat, trousers aud gloves were according to the fashion of the time, his voice loud and cheerful, his thick ha!r sel brushed. Altogether, in my oplnl n, he looked a prosperous man of busings.” Elsewhere Miss Corkrnn records Browning’s comment up:n the charge that he was too fond of “society.” He admitted frankly: “I do like to be witli refined people who appreciate me. It la a pleasure. Wealthy people have leisure to read, and their houses are j pleasant. I am not ashamed to eonfees that I do enjoy belli? with cil tured folk. Besides, I find that mixing with others and the friction of ideas are necessary to a writer.”
Well Remembered.
Valley City, N. Dak., Dec. 14.—Two years ago Mrs. Matilda M. Boucher, of this place, suffered a great deal with a dizziness in her head. She was cured of this by a remedy called Dodd’s Kidney Pills, and has not been troubled aince. Shortly afterward she had a bad bilious attack and for this she used Diamond Dinner Pills and was com pletely cured in a short time. In January. 1003. she had an attack of Sciatica, of which she says: “I was nlmost helpless with the Sciatica, but remembering what Dodd’s Kidney Pills and Diamond Dinner Pills had done for me before, 1 commenced a treatment of these medicines and in three weeks I was completely restored to health. I bare great faith In these medicines, for they have been of oo much benefit to me.” Dodd’s Kidney Pills are very popular in Barnes County, having made a great many splendid cures of Sciatica, Rheumatism and Kidney Troubles. Mnny families use no other medicine.

How Cheap Baking Powder Is Made.
A recent seizure of a lot of “cheap” baking powders by the authorities of • neighboring city has exposed the cnaracter of the low-priced brands of baking fcowder which many manufacturers are offering throughout the country. The price of the powd -rt first attracted attention to them. Samples were taken and analyzed. The official report of the analysis showed the stuff to be “alum powders,” composed chiefly of alum, sulphuric acid and pulverized rock. The powders were declared dangerous to health and several thousand pounds were confiscated and destroyed. Physicians have frequently cautioned consumers against mixing food with these so-called “cheap” baking powders. They are all found, when analyzed, to contain large percentages of alum and sulphuric acid, to which are added various sorts of filling mutter spm (times both Injurious and nasty. The high class, cream of tartar baking powders are the most economical and wholesome and should always be •elected for use. They will bg found cheaper In the end. besides making the food better and more healthful.
The Letter “Z” as au Initial.
The letter "Z” is very unusual as the Initial of a surname. There are nearly 700 members in the British House of Commons, but not within living memory has one of their names commenced with a Z. On the other hand, the Parliament of Victoria, Australia, has never In its living memory been without a “Z.” A gold fields constituency started the idea by seuding down to Molbourne a member named Zincke. Then East Melbourne elected a Hebrew gentleman named Zox, and returned him regularly for twenty years. Sir William Austin Zeal, who now presides over the legislative council In Melbourne, Is a third case in point.

rr; r. r~i r. g. Dun a Co.’« n6lf York. Weekly Review of Trade ■ says: Developments are not encouraging as to cotton spinning, but there is evidence of better conditions in the iron and steel industry, while retail trade feels the usual impetus as the holidays approach. Idleness among New England lumber mills is offset by increased activity in the South. Owing to pressure of grain there is still delay in handling freight promptly at a few western points, but as a rule traffic facilities are adequate, and railway earnings for November show an average gain of 4 per cent over last year. It is significant evidence of the attitude of consumers that, while the output of pig iron declined tff about 1,000,000 tons in November, the lowest point in several yeffits, furnace stocks rose to 658,107 tons, exceeding ail recent records. Such a striking discrepancy indicates clearly the extent of contraction iu this leading branch of manufacture. From present indications it seems almost certain that the situation will show some improvement by the end of this month, although inventories always retard operations during December. Footwear manufacturers report new business seasonably quiet, but plants are taxed to their full capacity, in most oases on old orders, and western jobbers are expected to place liberal supplementary contracts. Further gains are recorded In hides, both domestic and foreign. Cotton spinning is completely demoralized by the raw material situation. The mar'gin between buyers aud sellers has widened and little new business is reported. Quotations of cotton goods arc now practically nominal. In the woolen goods division new lines of overcoatings have been opened at a slight decline below last season’s prices, and there is no improvement in other branches of the industry. * ~ Interest in business deClliGdQO. velopments centers mainly * ' at this time in the progress made toward the final distribution of seasonable merchandise. Reports gathered indicate that results equal anticipations, both in jobbing and leading retail trade, the aggregate volume of dealings making a favorable comparison with the corresponding period of last year. Hesitancy in the buying of costly wares is less noticeable, and the jewelry, music and art departments have assumed increased activity. Reorders are good in the aggregate in several branches of wholesale dry goods, footwear and heavy clothing, and the mail-order houses are pushed to the limit of their shipping facilities. Groceries aud eollaleral lines are fully sharing the activity incident to this season. Other staples enter freely into final consumption. Prices ruling for most necessities average as high and profitable as they did twelve months ago, Manufacturing industries present no important new feature. Grain shipments, including 727.798 bushels of corn, aggregate 2,279,554 bushels, a decrease of 12 per cent., compared with a year ago. Favorable accounts of crops in the Argentine and Australia, together with a sharp falling off in the domestic demand, account in some measure for lower prices. Compared with the closing a week ago wheat fell 2% cents, corn % cent and oats % cent. Receipts of live stock, 348,332 head, are 14 per cent, less than a year ago.

A DMIRAL SCHLEY, on* of the foremost notable heroesof the Nineteenth Century. A name that starts terror in theheart of every Spaniard. A man of steady nerve, clear head, undaunted courage and prompt decision. Approached by a friend recently, his opinion was asked, as to the efficacy of Peruna, the national catarrh remedy. Without the slightest hesitation he gave this remedy his endorsement. It appeared on later conversation that Peruna has been used in his family, where it is a favorite remedy. Such endorsements serve to indicate the wonderful hold that Peruna has upon the minds of the American people. It is out of the question that so great and famous a man as Admiral Schley could have any other reason for giving his endorsement to Peruna than his positive conviction that the remedy is all that he says it is. The fact is that Peruna has overcome all

You see, this humid weather makes cigars soft and 6pongy. Even hard, well-seasoned cigars will absorb the moisture In the air and get soft In such weather, and when cigars are damp like that they don’t taste so good. “There’s nothing like the fun to be got out of a cigar on a day like this that there would be In smoking It in bright, dry weather; and only the most Inveterate smokers indulge as much In humid as they do In ordinary weather. “So a day like this Is bad for the cigar business.”—New York Sun.
