NOTICE TO DEMOCRATS. The Democrats of Jasper county are requested to meet in mass convention v Saturday, Dec. 26, 1903, At the office room of U. M. Baughman, in Rensselaer, for the purpose of selecting delegates to the 10th District Convention, which is to be held at LaFayette, Ind., Thursday, Jan. 7,1904. E. P. Honan, Chairman. U. M. Chicago puts up $75,000 and will get the next republican national convention. The assets in the recent W. D. Foresman failure at Foresman are said to be about $19,000, while the liabilities are about $23,000. Goodland parties were creditors to the amount of about $5,000; the bank of Brook, $12,000; and Chicago parties several thousand. The elevator and land was deeded to the Bank of Brook, which wonld have made its loss smaller, but the other creditors raised a kick and the bank had to compromise with them. The democratic state committee met at Indianapolis Monday and among other things fixed the dates for holding meetings for electing new district ohairmen. The prmaries to select delegates to tbe various district conventions will be be held next Saturday, Deo. 26, and our own district contention to elect a successor to Chairman Dan Simms of Lafayette, will be held at Lafayette, Jan. 7. We understand that Mr. Simms will not be a candidate for re-election. The state committee endorsed Hon. Thomas Taggart for national chairman.

The Democrat a few days ago received a lengthy communication from Zion City concerning the recent financial trouble there, but owing to our limited space we are compelled to omit the publication of same. The final adjustment of tbe difficulty tends to show that Dr. Dowie was unfairly treated in the matter. It is also evident that Dowie has been more misrepresented and lied about than any man in the country. The Democrat does not take much stock in the Dowie religions faith, but there are some things about the city he has founded, especially its moral tone, that is to be admired. We would rather see the city prosper than see it go to ruin and decay, and if Dowie’s subjects are satisfied with the status of affairs there, the publio ought to be, so long as the present moral tone of the place is maintained.

COVER BREAKS HUSKING RECORD.

The Lowell Souvenir contains the following mention of a well known young matt of Union tp., this county: “Machall Cover has beat the record for. corn busking in this vicinity, cdhditions being taken into consideration, so we are told by those who have some experience and knowledge. Monday he went into Wheeler Nichols’ field, where considerable corn was down, and huaked 110 bushels and 40 pounds in eight hours, which was Drought to Nichols’ elevator and weighed by C. E. Nichols. The corn was husked nice and clean. It is eaid that bad the corn been standing np well he could have made his 120 or 125 bushels. This is a record that Mr. Cover should be proud of. He is a husky, well-built young man, quick of action and certainly of great endurance. There are gallant heroes in the cornfield as well as on the field of battle, and this young man is certainly one of them. L. S. GANT KILLED.

Young Brakeoaa n tbe Tkroo-I Cut to Ptecto Loot Saturday. The remains of Lemuel S. Gant who was killed at McNabb, 111., Saturday, were brought here from Parr Monday forenoon for interment. Mr. Gant was a brother of M. O. Gant of Parr, and Pleasant Gant of Valparaiso, who with their wives and Mrs. Ollie Spriggs of Demotte, his affianced wife, were present at the burial. Mr. Gant had been working on a railroad at Eveleth, Minn., for the past few years and but recently returned here, About two weeks ago he secured a position on the Three-I as brakeman and only last week had notified The Democrat to change the address of his paper to Kankakee, 111., where his headquarters were. The terrible accident which resulted in his death, occured while he was on duty last ' Saturday morning. His train had stopped on the main track at MoNabb, it seems, while a blinding snow storm was raging. The unfortunate man had evidently taken shelter from the storm at the side of his train but stood on the tracks of a siding, and a cut of cars backed down and struck him before he saw them. The engine and five cars passed over him, practically severing the head from the body, cutting off one foot and one arm and otherwise bruising the body. No one saw the accident, but death was no doubt instantaneous. The funeral was held at Parr, Monday morning, Rev. J. A. Cochran of this city conducting the services. Mr. Gant was aged about 30 years, a fine, manly appearing young man and of excellent habits.
