A True Canvasbaek.

A good story is told of John Astley, a fellow student with Sir Joshua Reynolds in London and in Rome. While walking in the Campagna Reynolds and some other students took off their coats, but for a long time nothing would persuade young Astley to take his off. At last he was prevailed on to do so, and the cause of his unwillingness to comply with the wishes of his friends was then revealed by an oil sketch of a waterfall painted on the back of the artist’s waistcoat.
