BIG BANKS GO DOWN.
BALTIMORE BTARTLED BY TWO SERIOUS FAILURES. 1 "• • Maryland Trust and Union Trust Are Forced ta Suspend -Combined Liabilities of the Two Concerns Will Veach $10,000,000. ~7~ The Baltimore financial world was startled Monday by the suspension of two of the city’s largest financial concerns, with joint liabilities of $10,000,000. The Maryland Trust Company, with a capital stock of $2,125,000 und deposits of over $5,000,000, and the Union Trust Company, whose Capital stock Is $1,000,000, with deposits of about $750,000, went into the hands of receivers by consent. Allan McLnne, third vice president of the Maryland Trust Company, was appointed receiver for that company, with a bond of $2,000,000, and Miles White, one of the vice presidents of the Union Trust Company, was appointed receiver for his company, with a bond of $1,000,000. A number of petitions for coreceivers have been filed in court by stockholders and others interested. Although the two companies had no Interests in common, their suspensions were closely related. .The Maryland Trust Company has about $6,000,000 tied np in the Vera Crus and Pacific Railroad, across the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, in Mexico, which has recently been completed. The unfavorable condition of the market has prevented the company from realizing anything on these securities and it has become pressed for money. The effort was made to negotiate a loan of $2,000,000 in London, but failed, and this precipitated the receivership^ A run on the banking department of the Union Trust Company caused its embarrassment The doors of the Maryland Trust Company had remained closed at 0 o’clock, the opening hour, pursuant to a decision of the executive committee at the close of a meeting

which lasted until 2 o’clock in the morning and very soon afterward the petition for a receiver was filed by John S. Gittings & Co., bankers, who . alleged that they had on deposit the sum of $600.74. The answer of the company was filed at the same time and the receiver appointed immediately. The latter has a large part of its money tied up in the New Belvidere Hotel here, wliich is now nearing completion, but whose bonds are not yet marketable. The company also had out loans aggregating $500,000 it could> not call in and it was soon seen that with the continued withdrawal on the part of depositors the company could only meet them by disposing of its securities at ruinous prices and to avoid this the receivership proceedings were resorted to.
CANADIANS ARE BITTER.
Dominion Representatives Withdraw from the Commission. In consequence of the attitude maintained by the Canadian commissioners, Lord Chief Justice Alverstone decided not to hold the proposed public London meeting of the Alaskan boundary commission, but to hand its decision to Messrs. Poster and Sifton, respectively agents of the American and Canadian governments. The Canadian commissioners not only declined to sign the award, but said they would publicly withdraw from the commission. They as well as the Canadians connected with the case are very bitter. Telegrams from Premier Laurier and other prominent persons in Canada show that this sentiment is shared generally throughout the Dominion. The Alaska award relating to the Portland canal gives the United States two islands, Kannaghuuut and Sitklan, commanding the entrance to the Portland channel and the ocean passage to Pert Simpson and destroying the strategic value of Wales and Pearse Islands, which are given to Canada.

PEOPLE SPURN DOWIE.
“Elijah” Knrase.l When Multitude Leaves Hl* Service lit New York. Dowie's invasion of New York, judging by “Elijah’s” reception at Madison Square Garden, has been a failure. Half of the audience that filled the big hall
scrambled for the doors before the service was well begun.- Dowie, on the platform, in his white robes, surrounded by tlie Zion choir similarly garbed, pleaded, stormed and wept in an effort to hold the people, but in vain. He appealed to the police to lock the doors and keep the crowd in, but the only response made by an inspector was: “There’s no law to make people stay where they don’t 'want. This Isn’t Zion. This is New York.” Young women Dowleites begged the crowds to go back and list eh to the healer, but nobody yielded. “It doesn’t take much to stir up Chicngo,” said one man, who did not stay long, “if this man could make any impression there.” “Bluff,” “Faker” and “Pious fraud” were among tjje comments of the outgoing crowd. The guard outside on the avenue were disappointed. They had great hopes of New York when the crowd was pouring in before the services began. Dowie’s elaborate program was interrupted by the coming and going of people, to his great annoyance.

Gontalea, adltor of tha State, on tho street at Colombia, S. 0* will receive no punishment for his deed. After long deliberation, In which there was danger that tho twelve men would tail to agree, a verdict of not guilty was announced, and the former Lieutenant Governor and nephew of the pitchfork Senator was released amid a demonstration of approval by his friends. Counsel for the defense moved the defendant’s discharge from the sheriff’s custody. NO objections being made by the State, the court entered, the order. So defendant shook hands with the Ige and members of the jury and left the court room accompanied by his Mends and counsel. The jury was out twenty-four hours. The cause of the shooting was that during the previous primary election Gonzalez bitterly opposed Tillman in his race for Governor. The trouble between the men first grew out of the fight between Senator Tillman and Senator McLaurin on the floor of the Senate. Major Mtcnh Jenkins, who had served with' Roosevelt's Rough Riders in Cuba, was to have been presented with a sword by the people of South Carolina, and the presentation was to have been made by President Roosevelt When the President withdrew his invitation to a State dinner in Washington, which he had sent to Senator Tillman, Lieut Gov. Tillman withdrew the invitation to the President to present the sword. Gonzalez Jook up the matter Tu his paper and denounced Lieut Gov. Tillman. He repeated the denunciation* made on many occasions and dared Mr. Tillman to deny them. Tillman once challenged Gonzales t» a duel, but was ignored. Gonzales was a member of a famous fighting family, being the son of Ambrose Jose Gonzales, who, with Narcisso Lopes, began the struggle for Cuban independence in 1848.

READ SMOOT.
These accusations are of varied character, including the allegation that the Senator-elect has more wives than Brigbarn Roberts, who was elected to the House of Representatives, but who was not allowed fee take hie seat because of hit polygamous practices. Senator Burrows says he has received a great number of letters protesting against the admission of Smoot. As to the scope of the investigation, the Senator said he would take a moral and not a religious view of the case. This position is to be assumed because the feet that Senator-elect Smoot is a Mormon would not, in itself, have any standing in the case. The committee is to decide whether the accused has lived a polygamous life, either openly or secretly. It is also to find out whether or not the Senator-elect has taken any vows, as an apostls of the Mormon Church, which art antagonistic to the United States.

MR. ROCKEFELLER'S MONEY.

Mr. Rockefeller has not lately seen fit to publish his estimate of the value of his possessions, but sanguine gueasers rate him nowadays as pretty nearly a billionaire, and the most conservative computers believe he has more than half a billion. It would be impossible to say what la the total wealth of the United States, but the assessed valuation of the several States for 1902 amounted to about thirty-five blllions. Even If Mr. Rockefeller has a whole billion, there Is something left for the rest of us. Passing of a Curious Indian Custom.
Near one of the Indian.,village* on the Island of Vancouver may be seen a curious and interesting relic of a native custom that is fast disappearing with the passing of the wild tribes of the Northwest. It is a memorial to the great-grandson of the Vancouver chief Magulna, of the historic Noo-tka tribe. Magnlna was a rich man, and after his death, two years ago, his people held his memory In such veneration that they used his property for the erection of a great monument overlooking the sea near his native village. The memorial represents a huge “thunderbird”—one of the creatures of Indian mythology—and a whale Near by are two sewing machines, contributed as a token of sorrow by the late chiefs squaw. The monument Is probably one of the last that will ever be built —Harper’s Weekly.
