The new city directory of Portland, Ore., give* the city 123,000 population. As the result of a fire in some business preuuso| on Ivon gens (Jade, Christiania, Norway, eleven persons were burned to death and great damage was done. The seven-story building at,Broadway and Park place. New York, until recently occupied by the Broadway National Bank, was practically destroyed by fire. A demonstration in connection with the municipal elections in Athens was followed by hand to hand street fights. Fourteen persons were either killed or wounded. Indian Agent Ilarvey of the Pawnee reservation is charged by an inspector with whipping an Indian girl pupil of the agency school with a strap and yardstick until she is permanently iujurcd. President Roosevelt pardoned two men who were convicted in Alabama of holding a negro in a condition of peonage. Action was taken ou an apical by Judge Jones, who sentenced the prisoners. A fierce storm swept down on New York and the Atlantic coast, causing great damage and loss of life. President and Mrs. Roosevelt and party on the yacht Sylph had a thrilling experience. Rev. Sain Jones, the famous evangelist, was badly bruised in a personal encounter with Pot master Walter Akermao at Cartersville, Ga. The difficulty arose over statements made by Mr. Jones at his tabernacle meeting. A telegram from Dawson says tiiat excitement prevails there over the circulation of the report that pay dir: running 2 to 15 cents to the pan had been struck at the head of Albert street,-in the heart of the city. The discovery was made by men hauling gravel from au old pit. The node Itod.v of Miss Ella Kane, 23 years old and a member of the family that founded Wheeling, W. Va., was found iu the Ohio river.
