ItMM el latarMt (lathered la the Offices and Corridors of the County Capitol. Marriage licenses issued: July 18, Edward Davis to Clara Stephenson. —o — Judge Hanley has appointed Wm. Washburn and John Jones city commissioners, to take the place of Frank O’Meara moved away, and J. C. Fisher resigned. —o — divorce case from Rensselaer is about ready to be placed in the hopper. However, the papers have not beSn filed at this writing, therefore we cannot mention any names. Miss Mary Bates, the popular young deputy clerk under Clerk Major’s regime, has resigned her position and it is rumored will soon “undertake”—well, you kuow what usually happens when a young lady gives up a good position like that. The Democrat extends advance congratulations. —o — New suits filed: No. 6520. Newton J. Harrington vs. Agusta Harrington; action for divoroe. The complaint alleges that the parties were married Feb. 22, 1869, and lived together as husband and wife until August 22, 1893, when, at Michigan City, defendant without cause wholly abandoned plaintiff and has since lived apart from him. Plaintiff avers that he has been a resident of Indiana since 1846, and resided in Barkley tp., this county. White Poet tp., Pulaski county, and for the past year near Rensselaer. He gives his occupation as that of contractor. The complaint does not state whether the parties have any children or not. Defendant is now a resident of LaPorte county.
The county commissioners held an adjourned session last Fridry at which time the contract for coal for the heating plant was awarded to theWictoria Coal & Mining Co., at $2.60 per ton, F. O. 8., Rensselaer;. 250 tons were contracted for. J. C. Jones of Monticello, was appointed viewer on the new Iroquois ditch, Albert Foster having resigned. The applications of Charles L. Mann and Blaine Gwin for free scholarship in law department of Indiana University, were dismissed. The claim of sls of Mrs. Edwin Prairie on account of insanity inquest was dismissed. Notice ordered published for letting of contract for depressing bailers at heating plant on August 81. Several claims for assessing amounting to about $l5O, were continued. On opinion of the county attorney the olaims of about $25 arising out of inquest over the remains of John Schultz, of Keener tp., who died a few weeks ago quite suddenly from heart disease, were dismissed. The inquest was held to have been entirely unnecessary and uncalled for.
In the matter of the Hanging Grove gravel road letting, one bid, that of W. F. Smith of Rensselaer, was the only one submitted, and same not being in accordance with specifications the matter was taken under advisement and continued to the August term. The bid was for $15,300, which is practically the amount of the estimate. The bid is conditioned that bidder be allowed to use gravel from the Lefler and Overton pits, which bidder claims is equal in quality to samples on file from Warren county and Lafayette. Bidder also reserved right to use rock if arrangements can be satisfactorily made with railroad company to get it to a convinedt place. Delos Thompeon is really the power behind the bidder it is understood. It would seem that a stone road would be much preferred by the taxpayers of Hanging Grove, as it is better and more durable thaq gravel. It ia to be hoped that the contract will go through and the road constructed.
