Andrew Hicks was at Monticello Friday on business. A crowd from here picnicked .at Fountain Park Sunday. Mrs. Dr. Robinson visited her parents at Goodland Sunday. John Eck's new bouse on north Maine street is nearing completion. Mr. and Mrs. Bryant Cawley were Rensselaer visitors Wednesday. Mrs. Z. K. Smith visited friends at Goodiand Friday between trains. Geo. Besse and J. A. Lamborn were in Monticello, Tuesday on business. Mrs. Maude Laliy Reed is thinking of moving to Wolcott about July ist. J. H. Gilbert is buildings fine new house on his farm sonthwest of town. Squire Stephen Hamlin of Goodiand, has gone insane and will be taken to the asylum. Goodiand Star: Ira Rinker has accepted a principalsbip of the Remington high school. - Rev. Thomas of Goodiand, conducted the evening services at the Presbyterian church Sunday. Miss Townnette Parker left last week for Lajunta, Col., to visit her sister, Mrs. Hartley Church. Dr. Robinson and Messrs. George, and Bert Stiller went to Monticello on a fishing excursion Sunday. The Presbyterians held their regular monthly tea at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Levi Hawkins Friday evening. Several from here attended the White Spear ailv. company shown at Wolcott Saturday evening. Remington is getting up a base ball team for the summer, and we hope they will do as well as they did at foot ball last fall. Mrs. Allison returned to her home in Latayette Monday, accompaned by Clarence Gray, who will make his home with her. John Barnett is preparing to build a large new house on his lot east of his preseut residence in the northeast part of town. Mrs. W. H. Coover and son Clyde of Boulder, CoL, is here for an extended visit with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Josiah Allman. Josephine Cai mody, returned to her home in Chicago Monday, accompanied by her sister, Kate Carmody, who will visit theie a few weeks. C. H. Littlefield has bought N 7 Coultburst's half interest in the brick block on Railroad street, occupied by the former and Hallihan’s restaurant. C. R. Griffith is tearing away the old mill on the corner of Railroad and Indiana streets, and expects to build a cottage on its site, we understand.
LEE. Mrs. Wm, Lamar returned home Friday eve. Lute Jacks and family visited Mrs. Manda Denton. •H Corn is doing well now, the fields are dry enough to plough. S. L. Johnson, wife and mother visited in Rensselaer Saturday. Mrs. Rena Creel went to Joseph Stewart’s Monday to care for Mrs. Stewart. Mrs. Daisy Creel went to Rensselaer Thursday, to nurse Mrs. Clarence Carrothers. Mr. Wm. Lamar and John Clark drove over to Rensselaer Sunday eve to see Mrs. Carrothers. Mrs. Malon Lamport received two cases of very fine strawberries from her brother in Michigan Monday.
DUNNVILLE. Hurrah for Dunnville! George Tunner is on the sick list Robt. Mannon was home over Sunday. Otto Schrader is all smiles; wonder why? Miss Ethel Sage called on the White's Sunday. Bert Vandercar is going to South Bend to work. Mr. Owen called on his son a few days last week. Look out, boys; supervisor John Shirer is on the roads. For a good time, come to Dnnn's Bridge July 4th. Miss Lousia Laberge was home Saturday and Sunday. Mrs. Emma Ocker spent Sunday with Mother Mannon. Jim Newhouse has more hogs than feed. Call and see. Sam Seegrist was riding the Woodman goat Wednesday night. Lars Gulbranson and lady friend spent Sunday at Dunn’s Bridge. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Ferrel called on Govenor FI oars Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Ed Rockenbach spent Sunday with James Davis'. Mr. and Mrs. J. V. White called on J. W. Mannon and wife Sunday. Robt. Mannon and “best" were in D. V. Sunday eve. Come again. Bob. Peck Miles and Charles White are working in the Oily city by Wilders.
Clarence Howel and wife of South Bend, spent a few days with Elwood Davis. We wonder what draws the girls to the depot window so often and so long? Our D. V. merchant, C. Nelson, spent Sunday looking over his saudbur crop. Mae Witt, Nettie Miller,.Lee Fisher, Joe Bebelis are home from school. There was a dance in W. S. DeArmond’s hall Saturday night; never was a finer dance in D. V. Miss Georgie Dunn, from Kansas, is spending the summer with her grandparents, I. D. Dunn and wife. [Yes, come again, Editor.]
ASPHALTUiI. Mrs. James Hershman is on the sick list. Mr. Rice has moved on the Stoner farm. Mr. Mitchell is working for John Stalbaum. The basket meeting at Dew Drop was well attended. Mace, Zelma and Clara Grimes are visiting friends here this week. George and Ed Hershman are going to work on the farm thiS^summer. The oil field is starting to work. Mr. Cook has started a power on the Owens farm. H. Record, J. Stalbaum and Jas. Hershman are working for the oil company. George, Ed, and Flora Hershman have returned from their school at Valparaiso, for a short vacation. Miss Kentner died Saturday morning at 3 o'clock. The remains were buried in the Hershman cemetery. Mr. Hostcn from Valparaiso, visited at Mr. F. M. Hershman’s last week. He went out fishing, but had no better success at that than he did at hunting hst winter.
NORTH UNION. Fishing is all the go nowadays. Paul Makus is plowing corn this week. Ernest Stibbe is working roads this week. Well, Eddie missed one Sunday. I wonder why? Wm. Reed took dinner with Paul Schultz Sunday. Olga Ritter went to Rensselaer Sunday eve on the milk train. Ed Ritter had ten sheep killed by lightning last Saturday. John Younglas is saw.ng wood and drilling wells this week. Agnes Schultz is taking lessons every Sunday. Henry is teacher. Geo. Cover ahd son were fishing Saturday. They caught one fish. Bertha ~ Stibbie spent Sunday and Monday with friends at Stoutsberg. That’s right, Amiel, if you can't haul them all, put one or two on the horse. Wm. Faylor went to the river fishing, Sunday, but didn't have very good luck. Mr. and Mrs. Chris Schultz went to a party in Wheatfield tp., Sunday and did not get home until Monday evening.
WHEATFIELD. Wm. Holle of Kniman, was in town Saturday. Mr. Wheeler went to Chicago on business Tuesday. Roy Blue of Rensselaer, Sundayed with friends here. Simon Fendig is recovering as rapidly as can be expected. Mr. George Meyers of Rensselaer was in town Monday on business. The editor of the Shelby Weekly Review was in town Tuesday. Born, Tuesday morning, to Mr. and Mrs, John McGlinn, a daughter. Miss Gladys East spent Sunday in Virgie with the Shreeves children. Miss Blanch Steele of Kniman, Sundayed with Miss Coral Gtlbranson. Dr. Schwier attended the medical association meeting at North Judson Tuesday. Mrs. Arthur Trout of Chicago spent a few days this week with Mrs. Dora Denniston. Miss Zimmer of North Tudson, came Monday for a visit with relatives at this place. Mrs. Minnie Cover of Virgie came Monday for a few weeks visit with her parents. Miss Bertha Swisher of Lowell, spent the week with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Swisher. Joe Hillard of Dunnville, and Miss Bessie Fairchild of Demotte, were seen in town Sunday. Miss Beatrice Langdon left Tuesday for Valparaiso, where she will attend school this summer. Miss Floa Funk, who has been in Medaryviile the past two months, returned home Monday to stay. Dr. Waring of Evanston, 111., was in town the first of the sreek to see his patients, before his vacation. A large number of young people attended the dance Saturday night given by W. S. DeArmond in Dunnville. Jim Newhouse and Miss Nettie Miller of Tefft were in town Sunday. Miss Nettie returned to Valparaiso Tuesday where she will attend school this summer. Owing to the case of small-pox in town the big joint commencement which was to have been held here to-day (Saturday) has been declared off and no commencment exercises will be held at all.
FAIR OAKS. Eli Hooper hauled sawlogs for C. C. Kent this week. Mr. Gundy went to Chicago Wednesday on business. Miles Moffit is improving some from his attack of sickness. Mrs. Ed Kessler went to Valparaiso Friday to visit relatives for a week. 1
The work of repairing the Christian church is being pushed right along. Miss Millie Larson of La Crosse, called on Fred Fuller’s family Monday. People are beginning to prepare their pickle ground in this neighborhood. Little Munroe Gwin of Monon, is visiting his aunt, Mrs. P. H. Zea, this week. Mrs. Howell returned Tuesday from a couple of weeks visit with relatives at Oxford. Dick Mallatt and family went to Demotte Sunday to visit R, M. Dunn, and fish a few days. Jap Wright and family of near Mt. Ayr, came up Thursday fishing. They got six nice pickerel. Honnis Baker went to Momence, 111., Monday to work for the C. & E. 1., R. R., Co., shoveling coal. Several of the ladies of the M. E. aid society went to the Kankakee Thursday, fishing and boat riding. Miss Estelia Gundy of Rose Lawn, visited her brother Charles and family here the latter part of the week. Mrs. Will Reynolds of Chicago, visited friends and relatives in and about Fair Oaks the first of the week. Misses Edith Moffit and Floy Fuller went to Valparaiso Monday to attend the normal. They will be gone ten weeks. Richard Nelson and two little daughters of Brookston, came up Sunday to visit his stster Mrs. Cottingnam a couple of days, and go fishing. Cora Dewitt, who has been out west for the past six months, returned Monday and was very much surprised to learn that his folks had the small-pox. The Ladies Aid will give a strawberry and ice-cream supper, at the school house Saturday eve. Proceeds to apply on church debt. Everybody cordially invited. , Rev. Hall preached at the M. E. church Friday eve. The Christain people are using the Methodist church to hold their services while their own church is being repaired. We have been informed and requested to announce that the order of Red Men of Gifford expect to have a big time the first Saturday in July, or on July 4th. They will have some fine speakers from different parts of the state and will have a public installation, which will no doubt be verv insterestmg to many. Besides they will have many other attractions and amusements. Everybody is invited to come and have a good time.
SURREY. Mr. Harshberger is building a barn instead of a house, as reported last week. Hugh Brosnan and Levi Chupp are having a difficult time to get done planting. Robt. Crisler of Mt. Ayr, came over Monday to have a little chat with G. M. Wilcox. There will be preaching here Sunday at 10:30, also Sunday evening. Everybody invited. W. L, Bringle of South Newton, was in our town a few days ago inquiring tor a farm hand. Mr. Wilmington of Kankakee, 111., is in this vicinity, buying cows and heifers. He is paying good prices. The oats prospect in this vicinity is not extra good, but the hay crop promises to be an abundant one. Mrs. S, B. Thornton was at the bedside of her father. Miles Moffit, of Fair Oaks, last Sunday. He is sick with typhoid fever. Mrs. Estil Pierson loaded her household goods here Monday and took her departure for Bloomington, Ind., to join Mr. Pierson, where they will set up housekeeping. Wilson Shaeffer has been having quite a serious time from vaccination. He was exposed to smail-pox from young Jenkinson, who never got dowu, but Shaeffer did.
