Jasper County Democrat, Volume 5, Number 52, Rensselaer, Jasper County, 4 April 1903 — Page 4 Advertisements Column 1 [ADVERTISEMENT]

The Democrat is five years old to-day. * The supreme court has held the minimum wage law of 1901, fixing the wage of unskilled labor on all public work at 20 cents per hour, unconstitutional. John F. Judy’s former man Friday, Samuel P. Hunter, recently convicted of the larceny of a livery stable arid sentenced to the penitentiary, has boon granted a new trial and will likely go free. Supreme Judges Dowling and Monks handed down a dessenting opinion on the validity of county auditors and county treasurers receiving extra pay for services on the board of review, and it is possible the court will yet reverse itself in this matter, in which event those officers who have received pay will have to disgorge. Another official of the postoffice department has been kicked out, and again the culprit is an Indiana man. It is said that Teddy has given out that no more Indiana republicans need apply for positions in the postoffice department. This is a rather hard blow for our republican friends even though they have been very unfortunate in the selection of the gentlemen who have secured the plums in that department. A dispatch from Fowlor says: Tho Rev. Father Honneborgor, of Sacred Heart church, preached a temperance sermon hero yesterday, which may result in a movement that will make Fowler a “dry” town, although it now has eight saloons. Tho sermon was tho most. scathing denunciation of the liquor traffic ever preached here. He said the saloon keepers were committing crimes against themselves and that u they were ashamed of their business when they erected screons. He arraigned gambling dens nt the rear of saloons and charged that liquor would be sold to a man until he was drunk nnd he would then be robbed. USE ROYAL POULTRY MIXTURE.
