State Senator Wolcott is on the following committees: Education, Roads, Fees and Salaries, Public Health and Telephones and Telegraph. The Wheatfield Telephone editor has been down to Indianapolis this week trying to get the job of chief cuspidor cleaner for the legislative hall. He can get a pocket full of recommendations from the good people in and about Wheatfield. It is rumored that Senator Lodge’s bill reducing the tariff on Phillipine imports from 75 to 25 per cent, of the Dingley rates will encounter severe opposition in the Senate. The sugar trust is firmly opposed to such reduction as are the lumber and other industries, especially the tobacco growers. The fact that the reduction would prove of signal advantage to the islands would count as nothing, of course, as compared with the personal interest of these producers.

An exchange truthfully says the happiest man is the common every day chap who makes his own living, pays his own bills and has the respect of his neighbors. He saves a little money as he goes along, but ho don’t strive to get a corner on the local output, and is slave to neither ambition nor society. He never expects to wear out the seat of his pants in the senate, and when he slides into his clothes in the morning he never wastes any time trying to pick out the right tint of socks, suspenders and necktie that will blend with general effect. He wears a “biled” shirt when he feels like it. and when his pet corn begins to jump he whips out his jack-knife and cuts a 4-inch gash in the side of his boot, and nothing is said about it in the papers. He has an

appetite like a cyclone and he never has to sit up nights to poultice his conscience. He believes in the doctrine of "live and let live,” and when he encounters one of the needy he doesn’t stutter with his pocketlxiok The plain plug of a man is happy because he is satisfied and doesn’t spend the best of I his life in yearning for something about lour sizes too large for him.

Already the attention of the democrats is turning to the possibilities of 1901. Realizing that the republicans are afraid to enact any legislation inimical to the trusts and that the people are daily growing more urgent in*behalf of such legislation, they argue that the people will turn to the democratic party P6r relief in 11K)4, if a sufficiently strong man heads the democratic ticket. 1 hree names are now being generally discussed in this connection, Judge Parker of New York, Ex-Secretary Olney and Senator Gorman. Senator Carmack pine his faith to Judge Parker who might have been governor of Now ork this time had he accepted the nomination. On the other hand, there are many who would pass the Judge by because he was unwilling to make the race in his own state. Representative Underwood of Alabama recently aaid that he favored Mr. Olney as a man who had demonstrated his ability and had served his party well. He eaid that Mr. Onley had always been “regular” and he

believed that he had the confidence of the people generally and of the business men of the country in particular. With regard to Mr. Gorman’s chances, doubtless much depends on the next session of the Senate. His friends say that he will promptly assume the democrat leadership and will command so much respect in that position that he will become the inevitable candidate of the party.

SILVER MEN IN BOTH PARTIES.

Cincinnatti Enquirer: Colonel W. J. Bryan has the facts of political history on his side when he says the Democratic party was committed to free and unlimited coinage at 16 to 1 (as far as the Democratic votes in Congress could commit to anything) long before 1896. That is so.—Hartford Courant. Not more so, perhaps, than the Republicans. It is remarkable to note, for example, how many Republican Senators and Represenatives voted for the StanleyMatthews resolution declaring the United States bonds payable at the option of the Government in silver dollars. Among them were Senators Allison and Matthews, and Representatives Cannon, Keifer, Foster and McKinley. Many republicans who stood shoulder to shoulder with Richard P. Bland, of Missouri, for free and unlimited coinage, were aferward “goldbugs,” and that long before the question of free coinage was side tracked by the enormous discoveries of gold. The Democrats had no patent on the free-silver resolution of a problem that has since been solved by the works of nature. No thanks to any Republican Administration or any

THE GLOW 0/4 THE HEA'RTH OF AM'BITIO/i. There isn’t a business man in Rensselaer but has mspped out for himself a great deal of success in 1903. If he has been an advertiser in The Democrat experience will lead him to do more; and if he has not been such the experience of others who have been will be a broad streak of brightness across the hearth of 1903’s ambition. Republican Congress. Since 1896, especially, not a single thing has been done by the Republican leaders, who all this while have been in full possession of the Government, for the relief of the monetary situation. They are before the country on false pretenses. They are claiming Providential work as their own. They have been bungling and insincere.

FULLY EXONERATED.

The following clipping from the Urbana (Ohio) Citizen and Gazette will bo of interest to many of our readers. The Charles Ropp mentioned is a brother of Henry, Andrew and Horatio Ropp of near this city, mention of which, in referring to this matter, has heretofore been made in these columns: Coroner Arnipriester has submitted his finding in the inquest held over the body of William Heck, who was killed by Charles Ropp at the latter's home two miles south of Cable Christmas eve. As was anticipated the coroner in his finding completely exonerates Ropp and pronounces it a case of "justifiable homicide.” The following is the full text of the Coroner's finding which was filed with the clerk of the court Monday afternoon: "After having heard the evidence, examined the body, and considered the facts and circumstances, Ido find that the said deceased came to his death by a gun shot wound in the head inflicted by one Charles Ropp. Ido further find that the killing of the deceased was justiahle and excusable on . the part of the said Charles Kopp for the reason that the evidence conclusively shows that the deceased had threatened at divers times to kill said Kopp and of which threats Kopp had been advised; and that said Heck was threatening to kill the said Charles i Kopp only a few minutes ladore his death mid was at said time endeavoring to find said Kopp to carry his threat into execution; and at the time said Kopp shot and killed the said William J. Heck lie (Kopp) believed that his own life was in danger of being ; taken by the said Heck, who at the time bud a revolver In his possession and was endeavoring . i find Kopp to shoot him. (Signed.) IRVING AKMPRIESTEK, Coroner."

Mrs. Johanna Soderholm, of Fergus Falls, Minn., fell and discolated her shoulder. She had a surgeon get it back in place again as soon as possible, but it was quite sore and pained her very much. Her son mentioned that he had seen Chamberlain’s Pain Balm advertised for sprains and soreness, and she asked him to buy her a bottle of it, which he did. It quickly relieved her and enabled her to sleep, which she had not done for several days. The son was so pleased with the relief it gave his mother that he has since recommended it to many others.
