John Carpenetr, clerk of the town of Goodland during the memory of the present generation, was over yesterday as a witness in the case of the town of Goodland vs. Perry. John is about 6 foot 8 inches in height when he straightens up. and is probably the tallest man in Newton county. Some 15 years ago the writer was the nominee for town clerk on a citizens ticket against John, and then as for several years, previous and in later years, the principal effort was made to defeat him. We were “shy” 18 votes, and came the nearest to defeating him of anyone that had mn against him to that time. After that he was elected regularly by from 50 to 75 majority for several years, "but finally the opposition caught him napping one time and defeated him by a few votes. The next election, however.
