Mr. and Mrs. Frank Wood of Wolcott, spent Sunday with Rensselaer friends. Mrs. Wood remained to spend a few days with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Allen Catt. A daughter was bom to Mr. and Mrs. Frank E. Vinson of near Monticello, Tthursday morning, Mrs. V. was formerly Miss Anna Southard of Milroy tp., this county. B. S. Fending has moved into his new quarters at the river bridge where his better facilities permit him to pay the highest market prices for poultry, eggs, hides, etc. A show company was distributing a “15 cent ladies’ ticket” with their advertising matter here this week. We presume they meant “Ladies’ 15 cent ticket.” Rensselaer has no 15 cent ladies. For Fruit trees, call on S. E. Yeoman, who represents the Hooker & Wyman nurseries of Rochester, N. Y. Every Saturday and evenings at D. M. Worland’s carriage Btore, east side of public square. ts. The Democrat is prepared to turn out job printing of any character in up-to-date style and on short notice. Remember we carry the largest stock of paper, ruled and unruled goods in the county. Mr. and Mrs. John Brown returned Sunday night from their prospecting trip to North Platte, Neb. They found improved lands in that locality abont as high in price as here, and therefore did not purchase.
E. J. Hurley of near Virgie, has bought the furniture department of Laßue Bros, department store and will continue the business at the old stand. Mr. Hurley has rented Mrs. M. J. Hopkins’ property, across the river, and will move his family here next week. Read his ad in another part of this paper’ We understand that the party against whom the late grand jury returned an indictment for keeping a house of ill fame has moved away from Rensselaer. It will be remembered the woman skipped out in time to avoid arrest, and is alleged to have stopped at Lee, White county, for some time. Later, it is said, her household goods, were moved away, and the wives of some Rensselaer husbands are breathing easier. Dr. Berkley has leased the office rooms on the second tloor front of the new Odd Fellows annex, at an annual rental, we understand, of S2OO. The lower floor and the rooms on second floor in the rear of Berkley’s office rooms will, as heretofore stated, be occupied by Rowels & Parker’s dry goods store. Dr. Moore, we understand, will move into Dr. Berkley’s old room over the Chicago Bargain store as soon as vacated. B. F. Jones of Morgan tp., Porter county, was the guest of his cousin, Mrs. Lee Glazebrook Wednesday. Mr. Jones was here to attend the trustees’ meeting. He was a former resident of Kankakee tp., this county, and taught school in different townships here. He is one of tho four democratic township trustees of Porter, and a prominent and well to do farmer. He enjoys tho distinction of being the first democratic trustee elected in his township in forty years. The republicans here are having lots of trouble with those ton-dollar-a-year county council offices, which .they were kind enough to give to tho outside townships in exchange for the big salaried offices going to the Rensolaer pets of tho boys,. Jay W. Wiliams of this city hns now been placed on the ticket as councilman at largo in placeo f E. Weurthner of Newton tp. This nukes three changes in that pnrt of the ticket since tho nominations, the nominees refusing to be placated with tho ten dollar offices,
