“A FRIEND IN NEED,” ETC.
There are all sorts of people in this world but the most interesting one we have run up against for many a day is the junior editor of the Remington Press. During the K. of P. carnival here last August McNichol, who had no doubt, run up against one of the numerous gambling games provided by the committee for the youth of the community, came to The Democrat editor and solicited a loan of two dollars until he got back home, when he would send it over at once; he had, he said, brought over a couple of girls with him, and “forgot” to bring along sufficient funds. The money was cheerfully loaned him, and, after waiting three weeks for him to “get home,” a statement was mailed to him for the amount. No reply was forthcohiing and in about two weeks more we drew a draft on him for the amount with exchange. This week we got the money—less 15 cents for exchange which the loanee refused to pay. We are thus out the use of the money for six weeks, two cents postage and fifteen cents for collection thereof. The next time the Remington Press - gets busted in Rensselaer, why—our latch string hangs out.
