G. G. Morris visited friends in the gas belt last week. Berlie Parks was a Rensselaer visitor again Tuesday. A militia company is being organized in northern Benton. Several attended the Elk’s carnival at Logans|»ort this week. Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Washhurn visited in Cla> county last week. Mary Bellows returned home from Chicago Saturday evening. Wm. Geier and family spent Sunday with relatives at Reynolds. Miss Twonnette Parkrr returned home from Chicago last Saturday. J. N. Beal and son Will, returned home Irom Crawfordsville, Tuesday. Clarence Bndgeman has bought a 160 acre farm near Wabash at S3B per acre.

Joseph Fagot and brother have bought a half-section of land in Pike county, 111., paying #52 50 per acre therefor. T. J. Harrington has bought the old E. H. Briggs residence property, recently vacated by Walter Rich, Mrs. Mabel Templeton of Denver, Col, is visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robt. Parker, since Tuesday. John Berger was up from Huntington last week, shaking hands with old friends and attending to business matters. Mrs. Win, Chappell and children visited the former’s’ sister, Mrs. James McM 111 us, near Valin i last week.
The republicans of Benton and Newton counties will hold their joint representative convention at Goodland, next Wednesday. The base ball game played here Tuesday between Wolcott and Remington, resulted 111 a score of 8 to 20 in favor of Remington. Mrs. Ezra Bowman weut to New Carlisle, Ohio, Wednesday morning for a lew weeks visit wtih her daughter, Mrs. Maude Helvie. Messrs. Arthur Hartman and Lowell Paiker returned home from Richmond last riday, where they have been at* tending Earlham College. Gjo. Winters and family of Frances* ville, came Monday to mate their home here again, Mr. Winters taking Mb Dye’s place as manager of the Jasper County Lumber Co.

Ed Gobel moved back to town from the Otis ranch this week. W L. Bringle of Newton tp., visited relatives in these parts this week. Abe Bringle is plastering a couple of cottages on the Otis ranch this week. The section hands on the Morion have he mi on a strrke for a week, but went back to work again Tuesday. Wet weather still prevails. -There are hundreds of acres of ground that has no corn this year on account of the continued wet weather. A number of Fair Oaks people attended the German Lutheran church dedication last Sunday, six miles east of here. They report a good time with a fine free dinner. Dr, Proudly, who went to Colorado some weeks ago with his son Charles, for the benefit of the latter's health, returned a few days ago. He reports Charlie improving nicely. . The Children's day exercises at the M. E. church was a decided success, the best of order and everybody enjoyed themselves well. The house was crowded, although it being a rainy evening.
NEWLAND.
Mrs. Russell visited friends at Gifford Sunday. Harry Gifford m >de a business trip to Kankakee last week. Mrs. J. G. B irris’ mother is visiting her for a few days. Fred German went to Kersey Saturday to do some painting. Frank Parker and wife of Asphaltum, attended the wedding here Sunday. Earl Newlaud had his pocket-book stolen Sunday out of the house. It contained SB. fjuite a number of people from here went to Francesville Saturday to attend "Plano" day. Mrs. Owen Callahan went to Chicago Sunday to visit her daughters, Mrs. Hallaaay and Mrs. Whited, for a few weeks. Pearl Davis of Gifford, and Miss Mibel Castor of this place, were united in marriage at 4 p. m. Sunday at the home of If. E. Gifford. We wish them a happy journey down the stream of life.

John Johnson went to Rensselaer Saturday afternoon. Ame I Burnhnrt of McCoysburg, visited home Sunday. Mrs. Sattie Sommers is visiting at John Summers. Mrs. W. O. Carrothers visited Mrs. W. M. Lamar Tuesday. Mrs. Eva Noland of Lee, visited Mrs. Jean Johnson last week. Mabel Hoover of Hammond, is visiting friends in Rensselaer. Clarence Carrothers and wife of Rensselaer, visited home folks at Lee. Most everybody of this vicinity, attended children's day at Osborne, The storm Friday night did a great deal of damage along the railroad. Mrs. Sarah Hoover of Hammond, is visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. F. B. Kishling.
George Carrothers of Bloomington, has returned home for the summer. Rolla Smoker and a gentleman of Chicago was through the country buying cattle a few days ago. The big storm of Sunday made it look very discouraging to the farmers. There was water everywhere.
NUBBIN RIDGE.

Charley Pullins shipped hogs and cattle to Chicago Tuesday. John Grey and Newton Jenkins went tj Remington last Friday, returning Saturday. James Longstretch’s two daughters from Chicago Heights, 111., are visiting relatises in these parts. The ball game next Sunday between the N. R. Recruits and the Iroquois Valley nine will be played on the latter's grounds, 1% miles south of Blackford. The Parr ball nine came over to the Iroquois Valley ball grounds last Sunday with the intention ot winding up the latter team, but went back to their little burg with the score ig to 7 against them.

Mr. Stump’s children are on the sick list. Albert Keen moved into his new residence Monday. J. D. Hand, our liveryman, has sold his livery barn to John McGlmn. The Masons of Whea'field have been granted a charter for theii lodge. Miss Clara Fendig of Rensselaer, is visiting Mr. and Mrs. Simeon F’endig. The farmers will put cabbage and pickles in their drowned out onion fields. Miss Tracy Fitch returned home Sunday after a week’s visit with relatives at this place. Sunday School and preaching services will be held in Sternbel's hay barn, Sunday, June 22.
PLEASANT QROVE.
Plenty of mud. Frank Tillett hauled hogs away Monday. Mr. Tillett hauled shingles from McCoysburg Monday. Albert Parker went .0 Rensselaer Tuesday on business. Mrs. Smith and daughter Susie called on Mrs. Leonard Tuesday. Loss Pass commenced work for VVjlliam Bennett last Thursday. Several attended the Children’s day exercises at Gillam Sunday. Omar Smith and Ross Lowman went to Lafayette Sunday on the excuision. Miss Pearl Tillett returned to her home Wednesday after a few days visit with relatives here. Miss Jessie Evans and Mrs. Blair returned to their home at Peru Thursday after a two week's visit with relatives here.

Bernie Goldsherry was in Francesville .Saturday. Tom Robinson of Rensselaer, was in Gillarn Saturday. Giace Goldsberry and John Collins attended Children’s day exercises at Oillam Sunday.
Greely Comer of Wheatfield, visited Jas. Blankenship Thursday and Friday. Mrs. Laura Fish<r of Chicago, visited her- brother, Austin Rathfon, last week. Jerry Miller and wife and Miss Roe Dennis visited Jas. Blankenship’s Saturday eve. Miss Yern Goldsberry of- Francesville, is visitiug her cousin, Miss Grace Goldsberry, this week. Bart Reed went to town Saturday and I was seen going home with a new Plano ! biuder, Bart know-s what he is doing. John Whitaker and wife are visiting j their children, Mrs. Wm. Gasper, Isa ! Whitaker and Mrs. Jens Jensen, this week. Jerry Miller and wife, Namon Lugenbeal and Miss Roe Dennis went to Rens- ; selaer Monday. Jerry said they were : out for a time. Jerry Miller's peanuts didn't grow, so he has concluded to fill the ground with sweet potatoes. Jerry, we would advise you to plant rag weeds; they are easy to grow. Miss Ethel Wren doesn't raise any public opposition to practicing singing lon Monday night, but we conclude that she does not approve of it. How about I it, Ethel? When we think of all the rain that we have had we do not wonder why Blaine Overman and las. Wren do not visit their lady friends on the marsh, for the boys are not in practice rowing boats.

Ben Harris of Rensseiaer, was out to his farm Thursday. Mr. and Mrs. Hughs Sundayed with Mr. and Mrs. Francis. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Horsewood were at Mr. Hughs’ Sunday. — W. L. Bringle spent a few days this week with relatives in Fair Oaks. Miss Anna Bi ingle spent this week with her uncle, John Bill ot Jordan tp. Misses Nora Bringle, Feme Ponsler and Nellie Hufty were at Mr. Bowers' Sunday. Everal Smith and family and Isaac and Palmer Wells were at H. M. Shipman's Sunday. Several from this vicinity went to Rensselaer Monday night to see "Uncle Tom’s Cabin." Mr. and Mrs. Sam Thornton of Surrey, and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Powell of east of town, were at J. A. Powell’s Sunday. Mr. Sage and family and Mr. and Mrs. Fenwick ot Jordan tp., Arthur Powell and Clyde Clifton were at W. B. Yeoman s Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Bchuyler Cline and Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Cline ol Brook, Jesse Bringle and daughter Maude and son Merle, Bruce Stevens and Andy Ship man were at W. L. Bringle's Sunday.

The 4th of July is coming. Born, to Mr. and Mrs. Hughs, last Saturday, a fine boy. Mrs. Timmons was the guest of Mrs. Sands last Sunday. James Keen was the guest of Miss Tillie Olson at this place last Sunday. Dell Brown arid wife of Wheatfield, were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Allen last Sunday. Hon. I. D. Dunti and wife and their grandson, Walter Segrist, are visiting at Witchita, Kansas. Olda Vandercar, who has been visiting his parents for the past week, returned to Grant Park, 111., Sunday evening.

Mrs. Hans Paulsen of Harvey. 111., visI ited with Mr. and Mrs. Chris Nelson, a 1 few days last week. Norman Hendryx called on his dearly beloved last Sunday. She lives west of Hebron, we understand. Bert Nees ot Giftord, was the guest of Miss Cora Wheeler last Saturday. Bert | is an all 'round good boy. Will Comstock, who is working west I of town on a grubbing machine, says he i thinks the D. V. girls are as sweet as humming birds. Of course they are, Will. Messrs. Lee Fisher and Joe Hilliard departed for Valpo last Monday to rej sume their school duties. The boys will 'give a good account of themselves at the bar of examination. Our barber shop is a lively place now. Guy Ackerman the manager, is an expert tonsorial artist, full of tun and obliging. Ye bewhiskered and Samsonhaired people, come and get yourself renovated. We are going to have a children’s day : exercise at this place in a few weeks. We will announce the date in next issut. The Misses Mae Witt, Netta Miller and Bert Yandercar are the committee on program and arrangemeit. It is no sin to be forgetful but sometimes it places a person in a position of uncomfortable embarrassment, especially if the dearest and the sweetest person in the world is mixed up in it. A young man of D. V., while out riding with a lady friend a few evenings ago, urged her for his sake to take her hat off so he could admire her hazel eyes and nut-brown hair. When they arrived home and exchanged kisses she went into the house, leaving the hat in the buggy. It was found by the liveryman the next morning.
