IN GENERAL.

Immigration is now at highest point in history of United States, aud is said to be due to great commercial prosperity. The American Architectural League, in session at Toronto, declared that plans for the improvement of Washington will make it the finest capital city in the world. The American schooner Amelia Hearn, Captain Griffith, from Baltimore for Tarpun bay, has been wrecked on Abaco reef, Bahamas, and became a total loss. The crew was saved. George Kennan, Siberian traveler, visited edge of Mount Pelee crater, Martinique, on horseback. Volcano found to be split in two, with five caverns from which mud and gases flowed. A dispatch from Constantinople says a dispute has arisen between the United States and Turkey as a result of the wrongful arrest of two Armenians, who are American citizens, at Smyrna aud Beirut. The International Banking Corporation and the Guarantee Trust Company, both of New York, have been designated by the President as the fiscal agents of the United States government at Hongkong and Msinila. Circulars announce the appointment of Chief Engineer John Stevens as general manager of the Great Northern system, Including proprietary lines, and W. W. Broughton as general freight agent of the eastern end of the system in charge of lake traffic. Mount Redoubt in the Cook Inlet country, Alaska, has been pouring out dense volumes of smoke for over a week and a few nights ago spouted out flames. The natives are greatly terrified nnd many have sought safety in flight to the farther end of Kensi peninsula. Capt. K. G. Martens, master of the United States army transport Buford, was found guilty of cruelty, profanity and neglect of his log by a board of army officers, and he was ordered suspended from duty by Maj. C. A. Devol, superintendent of the transport service. The joint agreement between the United States and Pacific Express companies has been dissolved and separate agencies have been established in St. Louis and elsewhere. The main offices of both companies are in St. Louis. The United States Express Company operates over the Baltimore and Ohio, Lake Shore and Michigan Southern, Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul, Chicago and Alton and Wabash systems. The Pacific company has the Wabash, St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern, Chicago, Milwaukee nnd St. Paul, Texas and Pacific and Great Northern systems.
