DECAY AND ITS CAUSES. - IHE decay of the teeth is due to the accumulation of bacteria (small-vegeta-ble organisiiis)and food particles lodging in the spaces between the teeth. The bacteria cause the food particles to putrefy, and fermentation is set iip. During the process of fermentation, acids are set free which attack the enamel, or hard outer coating of the teeth, eventually eating it away. The enamel once destroyed the decay of the soft inner portion of the tooth follows rapidly, cavities are formed, and finally the whole tooth structure collapses unless attended to by a competent dentist. Therefore, to prevent the dissolution of the teeth, it is absolutely necessary to use every precaution to preserve the sound teeth, and to have the diseased ones promptly and properly treated by a dentist.
