“The Prunery” This might be the name of some cheap hash-house where they served prunes three times a day and then some. But Say! VERNON NOWELS . has done and is doing everything in his power to make the SHORT ORDER HOUSE so different from"t» “prunery” that you'd think you was eating at the Waldrof-Astoria. Just for a little fun, VERN wants to know this: If 2 and 2 makes one, how long will it take an elephant to pick his teeth with a custard pie? COMS AROUND, FBOYLD. WHIR! IYBRYTHIHa IS JOLLY AND PLSASANT—WS WANT YOU.

The only amounts placed on the "omitted tax duplicate" since our last report are the following, none of which have been paid: Abraham Halleck. Rensselaer $7 03 Abraham Halleck, Wheatfield 49 Abraham Halleck, Remington 25 .Jhlius Raska of Barkley tp., has been appointed administrator of the estate of Charles Vickery, the old gentleman whom it will be remembered came to the former’s home about a year ago and later was taken sick and died there. At the time of his death about 175 in money was found on his person and it has since been rumored that the old man owned real estate in Lake county. C. T. Denham, the new commissioner from the Third district, will have several months to serve before the election, and his public acts during this time wilt be watched with interest. We have known Mr. Denham for about twelve years and we believe he will make a good commissioner if he can withstand the baleful iufluences of the “inner circle.” We hope that Charley will be equal to the occasion. —o— The following jurors have been drawn for the April term of the circuit court, which convenes Monday. Jordan Commissioner Halleck was given a turn-down by his colleagues Tuesday, it is rumored, on the matter of allowing the claim for improving the streets about the public square. After being kicked out of the circuit court in his efforts to satisfy a personal spite against the contractors, delaying calling the county council t igether to make the necessary appropriation, and defeated in bis efforts to keep said council from making it, and piling up a big sum in interest, then "continuing” the claim after appropriation was made, Abe wanted to continue it again at the April session, but Commie--sionere Waymire and Denham said, "No,” and the claim was allowed and the interest thereon stopped. There has been at no time any chance on earth for the I county to successfully resist the payment of this claim since the improvement was ordered and accepted, and the additional cost in interest of $25f,29 over what it would have taken to have paid it last October is one of the many unpardonable acts of Mr. Halleck which he will have to answer to the tax payers for at the polls next November.

After several months nagging on the part of The Democrat, the Halleck telephone lines have been placed on the omitted tax duplicate for 1900 and 1901 in Rensselaer, and for 1901 in Remington and Wheatfield. For 1900 the assessment in Rensselaer is for 1 mile of line only, Abe claiming that previous to April Ist of that year be had but one phone in Rensselaer. Now, the franchise was granted him on March 27, 1900, and previous to the granting of same be came into the city over private property (across lots) and had at least four phones in operation for some time prior to April 1, 1900, those we recall being the Makeever House, Hanley & Hunt’s, W. C. Babcock’s, and the Auditor’s office. We believe there were a few others, also. The assessment for 1900 should be increased to include more lines and the phones in use at that time. Also, the three phones at Remington and the one or two at Wheatfield should be included in the 1901 assessment. As made it is on 1 mile of line only, or about sls. We thank the tax-ferrets, however, for finally placing this on the duplicate, and it again proves that "when you see it in The Democrat it’s so,” and we had accused Abe of being a tax-dodger.

Jasper County Judicial Convention Nominates Hanley By Accllma-tlon-Sink Re-Nominated. The Jasper county machine delegates went over to Brook Thursday, accompanied by nearly one hundred “rooters,” and went through the form of nominating Charles W. Hanley of Rensselaer, for circuit judge. The returned parties say that there were about five delegates from northern Newton who participated in. the “exercises,” but as to how these “delegates” were selected or whether they had any actual authority to act, we are not advised. C. E. Mills of this cityf we understand, had written each delegate that he was a. candidate for prosecutor, and stated his reasons for asking their support, but Charley’s name was not presented before the convention. For several weeks the machine here has been endeavoring to stir up strife among the republicans of northern Newton, and to this end a candidate for prosecutor from Morocco was brought out in the person of R. C. Graves. Of course it was intended all the time to give Sink the nomination again, and Sink so understood it, but to carry the farce through and let the Morocco man down easy, so as not to hurt him too badly, the thing was all fixed up, it is alleged, so that Sink got the nomination by one-half a vote only. Ye gods, but it was a close shave (?) No fights* were had and everything passed off as smoothly as it had been programed weeks ago. It was, in fact, a strictly Jasper county machine republican convention, and it could be no other way. The Democrat congratulates Charley on winning out so easily, but trusts that the wool sack will be worn for the next six years by an older practitioner than he. In all justice, Newton county is entitled to the judgeship this time, and the democrats—and many republicans—of Jasper county will assist her in securing her rights at the polls in November. 50,000 doz. WHAT NEWTON COUNTY SAYS.
Newton County Enterprise (Rep.): The Jasper county machine received a severe shaking up in this county Saturday. Agents representing the republican politcal machine, and Mr. Hanley in person have been busy in this county endeavoring to stir up dissension and strife, in the hope that some of the townships would select delegates to the rump convention to be held in Brook to-day. So far as we have learned they failed in every instance. In Beaver township the meeting was largely attended, but the forces in favor of standing by the Republican Central Committee and decency in politics won out by a handsome majority. It was ordered that Beaver township be not represented in the convention. In Jackson township there was but little trouble. The effort to elect delegates received but scant support. In Lake township the same result followed. No effort was made in any other township, except perhaps Lincoln, to select delegates, This means that Newton County is true to itself. If means that the effort of the Jasper county machine to inject county seat matters into the politics of thia county has miserably failed. It means that Mr. Hanley and his agents have endeavored to disrupt the Republican party in Newton county in his mad endeavor to obtain a nomination for judge, and then after he receives a nomination, he expects the same party that he attempts to destroy, to rally around bis standard. Will they do it? Newton county has spoken, its committee repudiated the outrageous attempt of Jasper county to disfranchise our voters, and the people in several townships in mass convention sustains their action. The Jasper county crowd will do well to read the hand-writing on the wall.
