Fire broke out in the Canadian Pacific Railway freight office at Winnipeg, Man., and the flatpes burned steadily until after midnight, when the entire building, occupied by‘offices, was demolished. All freight records of the last twenty-two years were destroyed. The loss on the building is about $15,000. The birthday of a republic hna been decided upon at the White House. President Roosevelt, on behalf of the United States, and Senor Estrada Palma, the President-elect of Cuba, agreed upon May 20 ns the date for the inauguration of President Palma and the Cuban republic. Official orders to that effect have t»een issued. Hangman Radcliffe was mobbed and badly beaten in Hull, Out. He wns in a saloon, where he is said to have made the statement that Stanislas Lacroix, who is to be hanged for the murder of his wife, would not be the Inst Frenchman he would hang. McEwan, the proprietor of the saloon, struck Radcliffe, who wns afterward mobbed. Miss Ellen Spellman, a chorus girl in the Castle Square opera company, will not remain on the stage after the end of the present season. Miss Spellman owns the new Beaumout petroleum geyser known as the “Footlight well.” She acquired the property upon which it is located a year ago last July, paying the sum of $5 for five acres of barren soil. The State nnd Navy Departments in Washington have been informed of the purpose of the government of Colombia to censor all cablegrams between all diplomatic nnd consular officers on the Isthmuslot Panama and their home governments. The notice came from Captain Reisinger of the cruiser Philadelphia, now at Panama. The American government being under obligation td protect isthmian transit, undoubtedly would hold that the tree use of the cables and telegraphs Is necessary to the exercise of that power and would not permit any interference with it.
