SENATORS HURL HOT WORDS.
Spooner, Tillman, Lodge and Teller Indulge in Bitter Debate. The race question was precipitated into the debate on the Philippine tariff in the Senate the other afternoon in a start-
ling way, when Senator Spooner, shaking his finger at Senator Tillman across the aisle, declared that meh of his party did not >i are courage enough to lynch colored men or deprive them of their rights. Senator Tillmtn retorted in a like manner, and for
several minutes the wordy Battle raged. During his remarks Senator Tillman scored tlie government for its “butchery of Filipinos.” Mr. Teller almost accused a number of Republican Senators of lying. The Senators all knew, lie said, whether the Wheaton interview concerning the Philippines was correctly reported, when they
suggested Monday it might not be true. Senator Lodge jumped from his chair and advanced rapidly across the. chamber toward i Teller. His manner, was so angry nnd' so unusual that it was feared for a moment he contemplated a personal attack.
The discussion continued several minutes, with a display of anger on both sides of the floor. Senators Lodge and Teller seemed to realize that they were approaching an actual scene, and soon regained composure.
