BOSS CROKER’S SUCCESSOR AS HEAD OF TAMMANY.

Lewis Nixon, who became the leader of Tammany by his election as chairman of the finance committee of Tammany Hall, is a naval constructor, noted aa the designer of the Oregon while he was in the government’s service. Hp is a graduate of Annapolis and was one of the honor students sent abroad to study construction in 1882. In the navy he rose to lieutenant, when he resigned. He is owner of the Crescent shipyard at Elizabethport, N. J. He joined Tammany ten years ago, ran for Alderman once, and, being defeated, declined further nominations. At the Kansas City convention in 1900 Croker wanted to run him as New York's candidate for Vice-President, and last year he was one of the men talked of for the Tammany nomination for Mayor, which finally went to Shepard. Mr. Nixon is 40 years old.
