RAILROADS
i One of the new, big compound locomotives put in service by the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railway recently made a record run from Chicago to Milwaukee. Fast mail train No. 57, engine 931, Engineer Ivens, with six sixty-foot mail and express cars, left Chicago at 10:15 p. m., twenty minutes late, and reached Milwaukee at 11:42 p. m., two minutes late, making the run from depot to depot, eighty-five and twotenths miles, in eighty-seven minutes, with one stop. Considering the slow time in the two terminal cities, the slow-downs for five railway crossings, the run was a remarkable one and is the fastest ever made between the two cities. Edgebrook to Stowell, seventy-two miles, was covered in sixty-five minutes (sixty-six and one-half miles per hour), and Wadsworth to Western Union Junction, nineteen miles, in sixteen mingles (seventy-one and one-quarter miles per hour). The run in detail was as follows: Miles from Chicago. Time. Chicago 0 10.15 p. m. Pacific Junction 5.4 10.27 p. m. Edgebrook 11.2 10.34 p. m. Roudout 32.3 10.53 p. m. Wadsworth 42.9 11.Ot p. m. Western Union Junction .61.8 11.20 p. m. Stowell 83.2 11.39 p. m. Milwaukee 85.2 11.42 p. in. Engine No. 921 has loaded weight of 290,000 pounds, drivers 84(4 inches in diameter, cylinders 15 -25x28 and has a tender capacity of 18.000 pounds of coal and 7,000 gallons of water. The Santa Fe has issued an order that no one addicted to the use of cigarettes shall be given employment by that company, and a number of cigarette smokers working on the railroad have been dismissed. When opened the new route of the Vnndalia from Toledo to St. Louis will be 450 miles in length. Between the same two points the Wabash mileage will be 437 miles and the Clover Leaf 454. The Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul will build at its West Milwaukee shops 100 ore cars of 100,000 pounds’ capacity and 500 fifty-foot furniture cars. The new Chicago-Florida through passenger train service ot the Eastern Illinois and Louisville and Nashville roads has been inaugurated. Hereafter locomotive numbers on the Great Western will appear only on the engines, and the name of the road on the tenders. The St. Louis, Hillsboro and Southern Railroad of St. Louis, with a capital stock of 91,000,000, has received a charter. The November statement of the earnings of the Denver and Rio Grande shows substantial gain* in gross and net earnings. The Cincinnati, Hamilton and Dayton has under contemplation the building of a new passenger station at Cincinnati. The Buffalo and Susquehanna Railroad is planning an extension of its line which will bring the road into Buffalo. The Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul has decided to double-track the La Crosse division, a distance of 197 miles.
