Bert Rich came home to spend Christmas. Joseph Matter was a Wolcott caller Tuesday. Miss Faye Canine was a Wolcott caller Monday. Mr. Henderson spent Christmas day with his parents in Wolcott. Nelson Bycourt of Wolcott, was a Tuesday evening caller here. Fred Bowman of Monticello, spent Sunday with his parents here. Mr. Walter Kay of Chicago, spent the holidays with Miss Fanny Jones. Mr. and Mrs. Ed Bond of Oxford, spent Christmas with relatives here. Ernest Skiff of Watseka, 111., is the guest of his aunt, Mrs. Ed Maxwell. Ben Blood and Bert Stiller were in Rerisseiaer last Saturday and Sunday. Lloyd Ford went to Elwood last Saturday to live with his brother at that place. Miss Pearl Jones returned home from Michigan last Saturday to spend the holidays. Mr. and Mrs. Dr. Robinson spent Christmas with the latter’s parents near Goodland. Mr. and Mrs. Ira Grant spent Christmas with the former’s parents near Logansport. Dr. and Mrs. Chauucy Landon of cago, spent the past week with Dr. and Mrs. Landon. Mrs. Bert VanVoorst and son, Earl, of Monticello, spent the past week with relatives here. Mr. Harry Corah and family of Indianapolis spent Christmas with H. W. Milner and family. Messrs. Homer and Claude Lambert spent s-verai days this week with relatives in Frankfort. Steve Yoeman of Indianapolis, spent Christmas day with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ira W. Yeoman. Miss Orpha Timmons came home from Hammond Monday for a two week's visit with her mother. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Donnelly of Illinois, spent Christmas week with Mrs. Elizabeth Peck and family. Miss Millie Fields of Rensselaer, spent the past week with her sister, Mrs. Ed McCloud, at this place. Clement Schuh, with his brother Joe, of Kentland, left last week for an extended visit in California, Mrs. Dickerson and daughter Margaret, of Goodland, spent Saturday With Robert Parker and family. Miss Golda Lamborn Lame home from Chicago Sunday night to visit her parents during the holidays. The Misses Mae and Minnie Hemphill of Indianapolis, came Tuesday to visit their sister, Mrs. Fred Burger. Mrs. A. B. Coleman and daughters Bertha and Anna, went to Kouts, Ind., for a four week's visit with relatives. Bowman Middleton came home from Uniontown, Penn., Tuesday to spend Christmas with his parents, Rev. and Mrs. Middleton. Miss Lelia Middleton, daughter of Rev. and Mrs. H. M. Middk-toc, was married to a young man from near Kniman. George S. McEwan, Tuesday. Miss Nellie Traugh, formerly of Remington. was married last week to Wm. Richards of Watseka, UL, the ceremony
taking place at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Bert VanVoorst of Monticello. Ed Stone, who left here about three years ago after assaulting Nightwatchman Holland, who attempted to arrest him, returned here a couple of weeks ago and is now living with his mother. He has been living at Hoopeston, 111., since leaving here.

Carey McDonald was here Tuesday. Mrs. Wm. Arnott went to Rensselaer Tuesday. Sam Holmes finished husking corn last Monday. School here was suspended Monday until next year. Mr. A. Foster delivered some corn to W. Babcock at Pleasant Ridge the first of the week. Will Foster, visited friends at Marion the last of this week. Wm. Eldridge, formerly of this place, visited here Tuesday. James Planck of Metcalfe, 111., is making an extended visit with Mr. Foster's. August Riugeisen and sister Carrie, are making an extended visit with relatives in Illinois. Mr. Loman of Pleasant Ridge, has purchased the McAft?e corn and will begin hauling it soon. Walter Lee had an auction sale of tin ware and other household articles last Saturday night. The dance at Iserman’s last Friday night was well attended and a general good time resulted. A dance is reported to take place at Fred Saltwell’s on New Year's eve. Everybody is invited. The party at Carey Huston's last Saturday night was well attended and every body had a splendid time. Willie Long and bride-to-be came on the morning train and were married by squire Bussell Tuesday evening. The good times had at the Christmas boat at Lee and the tree at Milroy can., only be imagined by those who attended. The box social at the Moore school house was well attended and a good time was reported by all. The proceeds were over > 16.00. When we hear our grandfathers talking of the cold winters they “used to have,” we can say that the past week should not be overlooked.
LEE.
Schools closed for a week of holidays. Ivy Carrothers spent vacation at home. W. O. Carrothers spent holidays at home. L. M. Jacks was a Rensselaer caller Monday. The truant officer visited the schools here last week. N. P. Rishling and wife spent Sunday with S. L. Johnson. James Kender of Palestine, was here on business Monday. Mary and George Allen spent Sunday at Ewing Donalson’s. A. C. Robinson of Monon, ate dinner with S. L. Johnson Thursday. Several here dressed their poultry and shipped it for Christmas markets. The fine trotting horse, which W. A. Weinreich sent from Chicago to Chas. Pape, a few. weeks ago, killed herself last Thursday night.
NEWLAND.
Lewis Shell of McCoysburg, was a visitor here Friday. Wm, Boughan and John Kieth of Wheatfield, were Newland visitors Sunday.
• Freeman Gifford and wife visited friends here Sunday. \ Grube & Newell of Kersey, are shelling corn here this week. John and Tom Akers were at Kankakee, UL Friday on business. Miss Nellie Jordan went to Hersher, 111., for a few days visit with-friends. Mrs. A. B. Dunfee will goto Wren, Ohio, Monday for a few weeks visit with relatives. Mrs. T. M. Callahan and Miss Ella Callahan did shopping at Rensselaer Saturday. Thurman Smith and Tom Dunfee were at Rensselaer a few days last week on business? Miss Maggie Callahan who has been at her sister's in Chicago since Sept., returned home Friday. Mrs. Stevens, who has been visiting her daughters here tor the past few weeks, returned to her home at Hershsr, 111., Friday.
FAIR OAKS.
Weather has moderated and zero is lost again. John Kight went to Indianapolis Monday on business. Abe Bringle is plastering Bill Gerry's house this week. Mr. and Mrs. N. Littlefield were in Rensselaer Monday. Mrs. Stella Shein of Lafayette, is visiting her parents, Ike Kight's. Miss Edna Brady of Chicago, is visiting P. W. Nelson’s this week. Will Brokus has moved into the Clinger house m the west part of town. John Thornton and wife of Rensselaer, visited with Colonel Gobel, Christmas. Jessie and Iva Moffitt are visiting their grandparents, W. L. Bringle’s, this week. Sam Howe has moved onto Sam Yeoman’s farm recently vacated by Mr. Magee. Bruce Moffitt returned from Wisconsin Tuesday night. Will be at home for a few days. Quite a number of Fair Oaks people went to Rensselaer Tuesday to meet Santa Claus. George and Henry Weadrink went to Michigan Monday to visit and eat turkey with their mother. Henry Wils in and family visited the former’s brother in Chicago Heights, during the holidays. R. W. Schofield of Michigan City, is visiting friends and relatives in Fair Oaks through holidays. Lew Stower. wife and two children, who have been very sick the past week, are some better at this writing. Regardless of bad weathei Christmas eve, the young folks gathered at Merritt Strain's and had a nice little social hop. Lewis Alter just got through last week surveying and laying the Kent ranch off in tracts of f-qjn 160 to 320 acres, which is on the market, we understand, Mrs. W. D. Bringle and son Ross, of Jordan tp„ staid at Abe Bringle’s Monday night, and on Tuesday took the milk train for Chicago, to visit the former’s sister.
WHEATFIELD.
Roy Blue is at his home at Rensselaer | for the week’s vacation. The masquerade, Christmas night, in the hall, was well attended. Miss Mary Wolard of Medaryville, spent the week with the Misses Funk. Bert Vandecar, a brother correspondent at Dunnville, was in town Tuesday. Quite a number from Fair Oaks attended the Mask ball, Christmas night. Anna Knapp and Mrs. Pearl Austin were in Valparaiso Wednesday, shopping. Mrs. W. Robertson and son Kenneth, spent a few days with her parents at Hebron. Mrs, Kate Tinkham and daughter, Minnie, did shopping in Valparaiso, Tuesday. Mrs. Sarah Holsworth and daughter, Mrs. Coles, returned to their Nebraska home, Monday. Mrs. Ditha Keith of Alger, Ohio, is spending a few weeks with her son, J >hn Keith, and wife. Mrs. Del Brown and children spent Christmas with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. White at Medaryville. Mrs. Albert Keene and children are spending the week with her parents. Mr. and Mrs. Gushwa, at Foresman, Miss Caroline Gilbranson is s; ending the holidays with her father. Miss Tillie Paulsen of Harvey, 111., accompanied her. Miss Laura Miller, who has been staying with her aunt in Chicago the past summer, returned to her home here Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. Brower and daughter of Monon, spent a few days of this week with Mrs. Brower's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Brewer. Christmas exercises at the church were very good and well attended. The*pupiis in the first five grades furnished an excellent program. Mr. and Mrs. Stylesand children of Piper City, 111., are spending the holidays with the latter’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jonathan Lewis. The Arab, who worked on the haypress for Pete Zimmers, stole Joe Croak's watch one day last week. The watch was of not much value but prized highly by Mr. Croak as being a remembrance of his father.

Eli Arnold did business in Rensselaer Tuesday. Charley Hopkins sold a fine horse last week. Irine Wray is working for Eli Arnold this week. George Ott did business in Blackford last Monday. Harry Arnold hauled a load of wood to town Monday. Charley Sawyer did business in Rensselaer Monday. William Daniels came from town Tuesday to help Korah butcher. Mrs. Alma Rigle and children of Ohio, are visiting with friends and relatives in this locality.
Guy Daniels wf Rensselaer* is staying with his brother Korah, this week. F, M. Hays, wife and daughter Pearl, are visiting friends in Howard county. Fred Renicker and his brother-in-law and wife are visiting friends and relatives in this vicinity. John Hays, May and Gifford, visited their sister, Mrs. Anna Florence, over at Rose Bud Wednesday. Misses Bertha Hopkins and Ida Lang departed for Wabash Co., Tuesday to visit with friends and relatives. John Gassy did business in Rensselaer Tuesday and hauled several persons out to his place from Chicago to spend Christmas. The box social at Cosy Palace was well attended and a nice time was enjoyed by ail. Myrtle Barkley received the prize for the most popular young lady—a fancy fruit set. The net receipts were Sis 75-

The foundation of D. V. is sure. Mr. and Mrs. K. Phillips are visiting in Illinois. Olda Vandercar is clerking for C. R. Peregrine. - Mrs. Jessie Gerber was the guest of Mr. and Mrs. J. N. White, Christmas. Prof. R. A. Mannan, principal of the DeMotte schools, is here to spend holidays. Mi. and Mrs. Claspell of Teegarden, are the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Marion Albin. Those ladies that made a wager with us and lost, can pay us some time in the near future. Lee Fisher departed for Cincinnati last Tuesday to spend vacation. She will be sad until he returns. Next week we will have something to say about that alleged cartoon Mr. Virgie "drawed" of us. Born to Mr. and Mrs. Luther Albin, last Sunday, a fine ten pound boy. Luther says, “another democrat.” John Collins of Illinois, arrived last Tuesday where he has been extracting corn-bread fruit from the pigmy forests. Miss Della Henry departed for the State Capitol last Wednesday. While absent, she intends to attend the teachers’ state association. Asa Hyde of Richmond, is the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Coffin. Asa extends a hearty welcome to the ladies of D. V., and all who wish to call on him. Frank and Fannie McCarthy departed for Rensselaer to spend holidays with their parents. Each was presented with a Christmas present by their school as a testimony of esteem. The Misses Lulu Hilliard, Edna Witt and Gladys Jones and ourself were the supperites of Mr. James Newhouse last Tuesday evening. Mv, you ought to see those girls eat. They ate enough to feed a multitude. Our Christmas tree was a success, considering the falling of dampness. As it was, the church was comfortably filled with a demonstrative audience who listened with rapt attention to the well, prepared program. Of course the tree did not yield as much fruit as it would if the season had been good, but as it was the branches were taxed, some to the uttermost.
BLACKFORD.
Christmas past and gone. Willie Morgenegg, who has been very ill, is some better. Charles Jenkins is suffering from the 1 neuralgia and rheumatism. Arthur Snow visited at his uncle’s, Th< odore Snow’s last Sunday. Uncle John feels all O. K.; some one gave him a turkey for a Christmas gift. Mrs. Henry Steele and family have : moved into the house just east of BlackI ford. Start in with the new year and take the best paper in the county, The Democrat. Only one dollar per year and it i gives all the news.
PLEASANT RIDGE.
Mr. Potts sold a horse to George Parker last week. Miss Laura Wells spent Saturday and 1 Sunday with Lola Besse. Blanche and Everett Potts visited the family of Mr. F. Arnott. Sunday. James McDonald of McCoysburg, was seen in our locality Thursday of last week. Joe Stone returned to Chicago Tuesday after a two weeks visit in our locality. -< The box social at the Moore school house was a success in spite of a small crowd. Mr. and Mrs. Tho<. Stone of Rensselaer, spent Christmas with Frank Stone and family. Mr. Willis Ransford of Chicago ■ Heights and Miss Stella DeWolfe of ' Lake Village, are spending the week as j guests of the family of T. A. Besse.

Wilbur Richey was a business caller here Thursday. Mr. Newman lost a horse Sunday. It fell cn the ice and broke its back. Reuben Dickerson and Uncle Tommy Ward were Rensselaer callers Thursday. Gilbert Heuson and Miss Anna Mayo attended church at Rensselaer Sunday evening. Frank Duvall and sister Cora, of Illinois, were visiting friends in this vicinity this week. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Adams spent Christmas with the latter's parents at Monticello. Ed Mayo returned home from 111., Monday where he has been visiting friends and relatives for the past two weeks' Herbert Toops, who has been attending school at Big Rapids, Mich., came home Sunday, sick. Dr. Hartsell of Rensselaer, is his physician.
GILLAM.
Chance Wilson, who was quite sick, is able to be about again. J. B. Reed was seen on the public highway Friday, as cold as it was. Jim Blankenship is still husking corn. Hurry up, Jim, soon be time to sow oats. One week from next Sunday night protracted meeting will begin at Gillam M E. church. J. P. Arnbrecht and wife and Mrs. Kenny and daughter Gertie, visited James Blankenship and wife Sunday. Stephen Boze, who has been working for Jas. Blankenship for some weeks, returned to his home at Buffalo, Friday.
Bart Reed said it would be a great treat to him if he could get to see B. J. Gifford’s train. He went to Lewiston the othei day to get a glimpse, but behold, when he got there the train had disappeared. Mr. Witt of Francesville, who commenced a series of lectures on the two covenants about two months ago, only give the first one and the second one. His excuse was he fo?got his manuscript and has not made his appearance since. Gifford is estimating the corn that is not shucked, in the field, that the rent may be hauled at once. Why not give people time to shuck their corn as com was late and could not be shucked until late last fall? Come, let us reason to? gether. Quite a number of young folks visited J. Blankenship and wife last Wednesday night. Among the number were: Elmer Bearly, Lydia Arnbreeht, Elmer Kenny, Emma Arnbreeht, August Chester* Anna Arnbreeht, Sam and Joseph Arnbreebt. The evening was spent in music and singing.
