"Way Down East" at McVicker’s.
Wm. A. Brady’s Great production of “Way Down East” is again the wonder of Chicago and the theatrical world. Although it is now playing its fifteenth week at McVicker’s Theatre. Chicago, there are as yet no signs of waning interest for the theatre is packed to the doors at every performance. The dramatic and thrilling story of the play, its sweetness and beauty and the abundance of good hearty fun make it the favorite of favorites and these things in some measure account for the very evident affection which the play has aroused in the hearts of playgoers in Chicago. Monday night Sept. 9, when the 150th performance in Chicago will be celebrated special souvenir programmes will be distributed to the men and women in the audience. The company is the same fine oragnization which crowded McVicker's for weeks last season and it is doing the same thing this year. Phoebe Davies, Ella Hugh Wood, Sara Stevens. Jane Millard, Estelle Ward, Robert A. Fischer, Ulric B. Collins, Felix Haney, Frank Bell. J. H. Bunny Frank Currier, W. T. Ellwanger, Glover Ware and other good actors are cast in familiar roles and bring to the performance all the ease and grace which long association gives them. The production is a splendid one and outstrips even the fine setting which was given the play last season. “Way Down East” concerns itself with the fortunes of Anna Moore, an orphan whose affections have been trampled under foot and who has been lured into a mock marriage by Lennox Sanderson. Disheartened by the death of her baby, lordly and weary of the struggle for life Anna finds herself in the home of Squire Bartlett, a plain but honest farmer. Here she loves and is loved by David, the Squire's son. Sanderson appears on the scene and Martha Perkins the village gossip makes trouble, ending in the Squire turning Anna out in to a fierce snow storm. When they learn the truth Anna is again taken into the home and there is prospective happiness for her when the curtain drops.
