We will take this matter up next week and show just where the increased expenditures requiring a higher levy, come in. Nowels administrator of the estate of Eph. Fleming, services nursing Mr. Fleming during his illness, $348. Claim transferred from the administrator claim docket to the civil docket. A peculiar state case comes from the court of His Honor, W. H. Robertson, editor of the Wheatfield Telephone, and incidently town clerk of the bailiwick of Wheatfield. Oue H. O. Brown, deputy prosecuting attorney of that commonwealth, is alleged to have dusted the seat of Ross Middaugh’s pants with his foot, said Middaugh, being a minor, whereupon the boy’s father, William Middaugh, has said Brown arrested and Esq. Robertson heard the case and fined Brown 50 cents and costs, $12.55 altogether. Brown appeals to the circuit court, and his superior officer will be compelled to prosecute the case.
Mr Workman, who has charge of the tax ferrets’ work here, was before the county council Wednesday and made a statement regarding the work done thus far and asked the council to appropriate sufficient funds to last for several months, thus avoiding the necessity of calling it in special session again in a short time. Mr. Workman said that there had been, in round numbers, SB,OOO adjusted, of which $3,341.02 had been ..paid in to date, and that there was something like $25,000 to $30,000
in sight, making the total amount to be put on the duplicate as a result of the investigation about $35,000 to $40,000. He stated that he had talked with numbers of the state board of tax commissioners regarding the state bearing its share of the expense of tax investigations, and that the said board had recommended to the Auditor of State that this be done in making his settlement with counties conducting investigations of this character, therefore Jasper county instead of being ont 25 cents on every dollar collected, would receive one-half the total amount due her, the ferrets’ receiving the other half for their work of unearthing it. Regarding the SB,OOO which Mr. Workman stated had been adjusted, we find that not all of this has been placed on the tax duplicate at this writing, it lacking some $3,000 of this amount. The following amounts have been placed on said “omitted tax duplicate” since our last report: AMOUNTS PAID. George E.
