A Circus Man's Promises.
The high-sounding phraseology and extravagant use .of superlatives has been considered a prerequisite of a circus manager’s annonneement. The harmony and melody, exhaustive statements, possessed sufficient magnetism to draw large crowds. The time has passed when a superfluity of frills displayed on the bill boards and a meaningless string of polysyllable words can draw crowds. Promises must be concisely stated and carefully kept, and it is the man who keeps his advertised promises as inviolate as he does a commercial promise that gets to the top of the round of managers. Such a one is B. E. Wallace. In his fight with the circus trust Mr. Wallace has encountered much opposition. Agents of other shows have visited the Wallace shows for the sole purpose of finding some flaw and excuses for attacking the integrity of the Wallace management. They would come armed with the bills of the show, and as the program was enacted they would check off the advertised features, and by their subsequent failure to attack the W'allace management, they virtually acknowledged that Mr. Wallace kept his promises. A promise frequently made by showmen is that their tents nre waterproof, and so persistently has this promise been violated that few people put any faith In such statements. However, those who have visited the Wallace Shows in recent years and were caught in a rainstorm will corroborate its statement that the tents used by the Great W’allace Shows are thoroughly waterproof and will tern almost any rain that will not penetrate an ordinary roof. The Great Wallace Shows will make its annual visit to Rensselaer on Tuesday, August 27. Subscribe for The Democrat.
