Few-Line Interviews.

Dr. D. R. MeCullough of Seattle, Wash.—Contrary to the usual opinion, the gold from Alaska has not gone to the East In great quantities. Seattle has been chosen fbr banking the bulk of it. and now none of the dozcp banka of the city is capitalised for less'Brnn $1,000,000, while several have a still greater capital. J. 8. Thompson, Assistant Manager of the Pacific Mail Steamship Company at Hongkong— Hongkong is the greatest port in the world. The commerce of the port of New Yofk amounts to more than $200,000,000 less than the commerce of the port of Hongkong. That Is a big business itself, and when it ie added to a bulk of business like that of the port of New York it becomes something great. The entire commerce of the port of New York is a little over $300,000,000, and that is a big business; nearly double it, and what do you think it must be? R. E. Hambleton of Santiago—The manufacture of Ice Is n thriving Industry in Cuba since rtie Spanish war. It It really amusing to wntch the Cubans crowd around to purchase ice. All classes and conditions that can raise the price clamor for it, and they clamor all ths seasons of the year. During the heavy rains the demand is lighter, but there is no very appreciable difference. Santiago has had ice for many years, but the old plant we found lu the city wee practically Incapacitated. Since the cessation of hostilities all the Cuban cities of any sice hnve been well supplied with modern mnehinery for the manufacture of Ice, and it is to the Cubans an Indispensable commodity. A. J. Lasher of Salt Lake City—Practical miners are wiint la needed In the Alaskan regions. It is the snmc, I suppose, with all mining cointrice—there are too many lawyers on ► tailors and bookkeepers, who always rush into n new country. These men, nine times out of ten, make a failure of a business they do not understand, and then come home and ro«st everybody and the country besides. Even in Alaska gold cannot be picked up by the bucketful, and ft Is not fair have any country rflsed up by the tenerf oet.
