CHAIN GANG FOR A TEACHER.
South Carolina Educator Found Guilty ot Whipping Girl Pupil. Ike Hughes, the principal of a larg* school in Lauren* County, South Carol linn, aged 42 years, and who ha* been teaching iu State schools for about sis teen years, was tried the’other day for whipping a young pupil. Miss Bertha Winch, aged 15 years. This was about six weeks ago. Miss Bertha said she was quite familiar with the contents of all books she was set to study and would not attend school. The muster wui angry and got a supply of heavy switches. He sent for bis refractory pupil, when he proceeded literally to weal them out on her perso*. He wore them to the handle* and they were shown iu evidence in court. Miss Bertha, aftei spending a month in bed, came as a witness. She could not show the stripes put upon her, but her mother told about them and about how her daughter's clothe* had been torn and disarranged. A lawyer argued for the teacher, but ths jury foffnd hhn guilty iu one minute. He was sentenced to a month on th« chain gang ami has appealed.
