SUMMARY OF NEWS.
The United States revenue eutter Grant, Captain Tozier, was wrecked on an uncharted rock ia Saanich inlet, an arm of the Gulf of Georgia which runs into Vancouver island about fifteen miles above Victoria. There vas no loss of life. An explosion occurred at the Cambridge, Mass., Fort National Hank at 10 o’clock in the forenoon which badly wrecked the building and seriously injured the cashier, W. 11. Hons. The cause of the explosion lias not been ascertained definitely. A sensation was caused at Lewiston, Irlahn, by the arrest of John N. King, a well-known business man, (barged with the murder of Charles E. Thatcher. The latter, who was a partner of King, was murdered in the firm's store at I.apwai the night of July 15, 18118. Jonns I-onswny, a teamster, shot and killed Frank Kiley, shipping elerk nt the Itussell, Morgan & Co.’s printing works in Cincinnati. The shooting was deliberate and without warning. Ixmsway was discharged by the firm ami Warned Riley with having been the cause of it.' At Beliefontaine, Ohio, a jury awarded $3,000 damages to David Hickman for injuries received nt the hands of a mob. llickman and Ed Jackson, colored, and Mrs. Nell Jackson, white, were tarred and feathered and driven out of town by indignant citizens of Went Liberty. Jackson was awarded SI,OOO damages and Mrs. Jackson $7,000. Edward VII., England's king, was aboard Shamrock 11.. the America's cup challenger, when a vicipus squall struck her broadside on, ripped away her sails, lore out her masts and left her a helpless hulk, tossing on the wind-lashed waves. For a time it seemed that sbt* must founder and sink, but she whs finally towed into harbor at Cowes. Fifty-five of the largest boats on the great lakes were formally transferred to the United States Steel Corporation when bills of sale of the Bessemer Steamship Company’s lake fleet to the Pittsburg Steamship Company, the subsidiary corporation that will operate the steel trust’s Tnisiness, were filed in the Duluth customs office.
