A Proposed Salary Grab.
New Senate Bills. No. 42}. Senator Wolcott Increasing the salary of recorder of Jasper county to $1,750. Aw will be seen from the above, Senator Wolcott lifts introduced a bill to increase tho salary of the recorder of Jasper county from $l,lOO per year to $1,750 per year. The recorder was re-elected at the late election for another four years' term, but we don’t remember at any time during the campaign of hearing that he would ask for an increase in salary of SOSO per year if the people would re-elect him. Of course Senator Wolcott would not have introduced this bill if he line! not been requested to do so With all due respect for Mr. Porter, who is an efficient officer and a pleasant gentleman to meet, The Democrat thinks his asking for an increase of salary at this time comes with very poor taste. He accepted the re-nomination for recorder well knowing what the salary and duties of the office were, and he has no moral right to now ask—after ho has secured the election for another four years—for an increase of more than one-third to his salary. As a matter of fact the recorder’s office is the most desirable office in Jasper county—both in duties and salary. The office can be and is conducted at an expense for deputy hire of not more than 1150 per year, leaving a great deal of leisure to the officer and $950 per year clear for his salary. The office as at present conducted is opened later and closes earlier than any of the other offices, and as before stated, is the most desirable office, both in duties and salary, of any in the county. §ena tor Wolcott’s bill should be killed with a big K. and we trust it will be. v v
