INDIANA INCIDENTS.
RECORD OF EVENTS OF THt PAST WEEK. From Altar to MAd house—Decision on Constitutional Amendment* Voted on in November—Vast Estate for Poor Man—Valuable Diamonds Found. Frank Strieker, whose death occurred at the Richmond insane hospital recently, was the victim of an ill-starred matrimonial venture, iu which he lost his savings and afterward his mind. Strieker was a skilled carriage builder and held several positions of responsibility. In the summer of 1899 he met a widow from Charlestown, W. Va., who claimed to have $25,000. A marriage followed at Charlestown in November, 1899. Soon after the wedding Mrs, Strieker, whose wealth proved a myth, induced her husband to withdraw his savings, amounting to about $1,500, from a Rushville bank and take a mortgage on her house. After the payment of the mortgage Strieker was informed that he was not wanted any longer. In March last he returned to Rushville and brooded over the loss of bis money unfil his health failed. Constitutional Amendments Fait. The Supreme Court has declared that the amendment to the constitution submitted to the electors last November providing for examinations of applicants for licenses to practice law had failed to carry, notwithstanding the fact that 240,031 votes were cast for the amendment and 144,072 votes against it. A second amendment, providing for nn increase in the number of judges of the Supreme Court, is also declared to hnve been lost, although it received 314,710 votes, while 179,960 were cast against it. The opinion takes the position that the court is bound to know that there are as many electors in the State as voted for Gov eiuor at the November election, and as less than half that many voted Tor the amendments they were not adopted. Aaron Silvers, a carpeDtcr in moderate circumstances living near Richmond, and liis brother, John Silvers, of Hamilton, Ohio, expect soon to inherit two estates — one of $140,000,000, on their father's side.
