Two Perry county township trustees were short in their accounts about §2,(XX) each when they came to turn the office over to their successors. The grand jury indicted them and the men took leg bait. It is claimed that the first known instance of burning a negro for rape occurred in the fall of 1882 at Alt. Vernon, Indiana. Indianaifiiis should not condemn too strenously a punishment meted out to these brutes in other parts of the country, which was introduced by th ‘ir own proud state. The Apologist made a retraction of several of its charges against The Democrat editor in its latest issue, in response to the legal notice served upon him Tuesday. He will perhaps be sorry that ho didn't refract a little more before he gets through with this matter. The whnlr article was inspired by business jealousy Marshall didn’t get to print the ballots.
When anyone hears of Windbag Landis of the Ninth congressional district, raising a howl for the prosecufii n of the republican scoundrels who forged the tally sheets of Hamilton county in his favor, let him report without delay, He will listen in vain for the howl. The Delphi statesman can stand lots of this kind of goring the other fellow ’s ox. Next week we will publish a few of the Apologist’s charges for act- | ing as purchasing agent for Jns-< per county and some other items! of general interest concerning it. j In the meantime, if the Apologist j ever made a legal publication for' •Jasper county that it didn’t charge j full legal rates or a little more for | (unless in trying to beat some other paper out of the w T ork) we j would like very much to see a copy j of the publication and the bill ac- j compnnying it. We want to frame j it and have it hung up in the! museum at the court house. In regard to the two columns of falsehood and billingsgate in the Apologist, otherwise the “official organ,” of Tuesday last, we will say thnt notice was served on the editor of that sheet Tuesday afternoon to publish a retraction of the whole article, and that suits have already been instituted charging him with crin inal libel. A civil action for damages will also be brought. This very honorable editor has heretofore stated that the courts were the proper place to settle these matters and we are willing to accomodate him. We assure him amt the public that when these eases come up for trial we will not find it convenient to take a trip to Colorado for-our health.
