The Monon Route has made a rate of one and one third fare to C. E. U, convention at Lafayette, Nov. 29 to Dec. 2nd. W. H. Beam, Agt. Today’s Rensselaer markets (all top pricos): Wheat 65; com 32; oats 21; rye 42. One year ago today the prices were, wheat 65; corn 28; oats rye 45. Warren & Irwin are making loans on farm or city property at a low rate of interest and commission and on more liberal terms than can be obtained elsewhere in Jasper County. The Thanksgiving football games here resulted as follows: Brookston vs. Rensselaer High School, 12 to 0 in favor of the latter. Bennet Medical College, Chicago, vs. Rensselaer, 6 to 0 in favor of Rensselaer. Monon vs. Rensselaer 2nd, High School, 5 to 0 in favor of Rensselaer. The Apologist man, who oscillates from foot ball to Gifford’s railroad and vice versa, and who is supposed to be “on the inside” councils with the Barkley township emperor, says there is a good probability of Gifford’s abandoning the Rensselaer line after all, and gives as an excuse that the grading will cost more than anticipated. We would suggest that new elections be called in Berkley and Marion to vote enough tax to build the road complete and turn it over to Mr. Gifford, together with the $40,000 already voted.
The Puritan Social at the M. E. church Tuesday evening was a success in every way, and a wagon load of Thanksgiving provisions were donated for distribution among those of our city whom it was thought would appreciate such articles. The gifts included 29 dressed and live chickens, flour, corn meal, ten bushels of potatoes, apples, canned fruit of every description, etc., etc. The provisions were destributed Wednesday to twenty-nine families, and the committee had sufficient to treat each one alike. Having purchased the grocery store in Odd Fellows Building I expect to add to the stock on hand everything necessary to make it complete in every particular. The goods are new and I shall aim to keep the stock in prime condition at all times. Everything in the grocery line, with a nice line of queensware, etc. and a large line of cigars and tobacco, candies, etc. 1 respectfully solicit a portion of the trade, and guarantee fair, courteous treatment to nil. Come and see the new Cash Grocery in front of the pourt house.. W. H. Coover, Prop. The Byrd Syndicate has changed its name and has been incorporated under the name “Federal Oil and Asphaltum Co.” The St. Joe Oil Co. has also incorporated under a new name, the “Indiana Oil and Asphaltum Co.” Mr. Enstlake, the English representative of what was then the Byrd Syndicate, who was here about two months ngo to investigate matters, hns arrived in England and in his report to the stockholders speaks in glowing terms of the possibilities in the Medaryville oil fields and recommends the drilling of hundreds more wells. Medaryville Advertiser. W. B. Yeoman of Newton tp., showed us a copy of a Mamin paper, a few days ago, “The Manila Times,” which his nephew W. B. Yeoman, who has been down there soldering for the past two years, sent to him. It is the most newsy Philippine pnpcr we have yet seen and contains a number of advertisements, 27 of which are devoted to extolling the virtues of American beers and whiskies. Mr. Yeoman wroto a letter at the time of sending the papers, and enclosed a window pane—one of those used in the upper tendum houses. It is about 2 inches square and is cut from a thin, white, transparent shell. He says that during the whole time he has been in the Philippines he has seen but oue intoxicated Filifiino. We would infer, however, hat he cannot say the same of the Americans.
