Cashier Frank M. Brown has disappeared from Newport, Ky., and the German National Bank is short $2Ol/000. The population of the State of Kentucky, as officially announced, i$ 2,147,174, against 1,858,035 in ISDO. This is an increase of 288,530, or 15.5 per cent. Sum Shepard, convicted of murder in the first degree at Elizabeth, \Y. Va., was sentenced to be banged. He murdered his wife, her baby and his young stepson. In San Antonio, Texas, fire broke out in A. B Frank Company's wholesale grocery store. The loss will not exceed $40,000. Two men were badly hurt by falling glass. The Cumberland Telephone Company lias bought the telephone system at Nieh- • olasville, Stanford ami Lebanon, Ky., owned by J. A. Kelly and B. T. Conway, for $23,000, and the system at Danville. Two men were instantly killed and four others received injuries that will probably result fatally in a disastrous rear-end collision that took place on the Alabama ami Vicksburg road, one mile west of Jackson. Miss, On account of a protracted drouth there is great suffering iu the mountain counties of Kentucky. Prayers are offered nt every Sunday service and special prayer meetings are being held because of the lack of rain. Yirgiuia College, an institution for young women, situated just outside the city limits of Roanoke, Va.. was burned. The 150 girl students escaped without mishap, hut many of them were thinly clad. The loss Is $75,000. A fits* which originated in the Valley Hotel nt Philippi, \V. Va., destroyed a large portion of the business area of the city. The blaze is supposed to have started from a defective flue iu the hotel. The loss will approximate SIOO,OOO, Captain C. 8. Itiche, U. S. A., has left Galveston for New York with the complete plans aud estimates of work which, if favorably acted upon by Congress, will mean the expenditure of $3,500,000 at Galveston by the Federal Government.
