Jasper County Democrat, Volume 3, Number 24, Rensselaer, Jasper County, 22 September 1900 — Old Settlers' Meeting. [ARTICLE]

Old Settlers' Meeting.

The third annual meeting of Jasper county old settlers was a success in every way. The attendance was good and the program was well carried out. Saturday was ths big day and probably there were nearly 2,000 people in attendance during the afternoon. A number of the speakers whose names appeared in the program were unable to be present, among whom were our democratic candidates for state office. The prizes offered by the business men were awarded as follows: Best Man Sinner, John L. Pierce, a shirt, by L. Wildberf. Best Wotnan Sin*er, Mrs. Josephine Kenton, book, by B. F. Fendfg. Best Man Declaimer, R. B. Porter, halfbushel measure, by W. H. Rger. Best Woman Declaimer, pocketbook, by A. F. Long. Best Woman's Story, Mrs. Phebe Nowels, glove box, by J. A. Larsh, Oldest Man, Ward Anderson of Morocco, hat, by Laßue Bros. Oldest Woman Mrs. Phebe Nowels, cake plate, by John Eger. Heaviest Couple. Wm. Kenton and wife, wt. 4X) lbs., granite teapot, by Warner Bros. Old Time Music, John Pullins, pair of gloves, by B. Forsythe. The meeting was very interesting, especially to the older people, and a number of interesting reminisences of early Jasper were given. Uncle David Nowels’ article on “Jasper’s first settlement” was of especial interest. We regret that we have not the space to enter more fully into the proceedings or to mention each of the interesting features. Suffice it to say that all who attended were well pleased and the attendance and interest next year will be greater than ever before, and "old settlers” promises to become the big day of the year in Jasper county.
