EXTENSIVE MARL[?]EDS.
Indiana Deposits Add Greatly To Total Wealth of State. State Geologist Blatchley spent last week examining the marl deposits in the northern part of the State. He will return to that region in about two weeks to make further investigations. On this trip Mr. Blatchley wns in the vicinity of the Kankakee River and about English Lake. The new deposits of marl just found are of the most promising kind, he says. Most of it lies just below the surface, and will require very little labor to expose for excavation. Three companies are already operating in the field, and the prospect is that others will enter the territory soon. Mr. Blatchley is enthusiastic about the outlook, and says he believes that within the next few years the Kankakee region will be the richest in the State. Draining is increasing in effectiveness and extent, he says, and the rich soil as well as all mineral and other deposits will be available. “The regions in Indiana that were once made the most fun of,” he continued, will be the richest in the State in time. Ten years ago in the county where I have been working this week it was impossible to do anything on account of the water. Now much of it is being farmed and all of it will be in time. The people are learning how to drain their land. Later the land will be worth $100 per acre. Just now it is not held higher than $25. But the future I will work great changes. Indiana’s resources are wonderful The marl deposits and all the land that is being opened for cultivation will add greatly to the total wealth of the State.”— Indianapolis.
