Admits That He Lied.
A CORRECTION. The last sentence of Gifford’s letter, published Thursday, should have read: “Should these elections carry I will proceed to survey the line and, if practicable, put the same under construction at once." As published the two important words, “if practicable" were left out. "* We make this correction because we will not, knowingly, misquote nor misrepresent Mr. Gilford’s statements, in anyway, nor for any purpose.—Apologist, July 17. "Would not, knowingly, misquote,” indeed. The editor of the Apologist only made the “correction ’ when called down good and hard by a prominent republican who had heard the letter referred to read before publication was made. The honorable (?) editor denied emphatically that any part of the letter had been “juggled” until forced to get it aud make comparison. Then it was seen that the “two important word's” lmd been erased. Who erased them if not Marshall? Did he “edit” the letter and fail to observe that those words had been erased? “Would not misquote,” indeed. The editor of the Official Apologist would misquote Jesus Christ if by so doing he could inveigle the taxpayers into doing something that their better judgement told them was wrong.
