Rebellion In Nineteen Hundred.
To define rebellion now would rack poor Webster's brain, Or to tell what we are buying with our millions from old Spain. Is it mount and isle and citv, with inhabitants thrown in? Or are we buying human souls and trafficking in sin? If not, what are the people of each colony we gain, Who. like the helpless Indians, by hecatombs are slain. Because they fight for freedom, not quite the same as ours. And do not bow before the flag, nor trust in unknown powers— Who love to live in idleness, beneath the palm tree's shade, 'Rejecting all our learning, and refusing all our trade? Sueh ideas prove them rebels—as the Cubans were to Spain— When we sought a right to quarrel, and found it in the Maine. The governed must consent to the great Republic’s rule, Whose mission is to civilise and teach a grammar school. Yet freedom is man's heritage, though the oracle be dumb, And her dying shrieks are stilled by the rolling of the drum.
