Narrow Streets.
The seaport town of Great Yarmouth, on the eastern coast of England, con-' tains a street that Is, perhaps, the narrowest built-up street In the world. It is known as “Kitty Witches Row," and measurement give® its greatest width as flfty-slx inches. Its entrance is considerably narrower and would seriously inconvenience a atout person trying to pass through It. Twenty-nine inches from wall to wall Is all the room that can be spared In this part. Yarmouth is a quaint old town, containing many streets like Kitty Witches Row. They are all called rows, and are more convenient to look at than for traffic. A hundred and for£y-flve of these narrow passages, making a length of over seven miles In all, are to be found within the town.

COMMERCIAL AND FINANCIAL
New York—Reports of declines in commodity prices continue to come in, and there has been soihe falling off in the volume of business. The months of July and“ f August always have been a comparatively dull season in nearly all lines of trade. The fiscal year of the Government has ended, and advices from Washington state that experts estimate that exports of merchandise will reach the enormous total of $1,400,000,000, an increase of $173,000,000 as compared with the preceding year. In the stock market the situation is still one that tends to conservatism. Buying orders are being held back because of the presidential campaign, the reports of crop damage and the Chinese complications. The prevailing idea now is that the market will continue dull and rather narrow for several weeks. Chicago—The speculative fever in the wheat market gave no sign of abatement during the week, although the trend of prices was reversed and the previous week’s advance all but obliterated. The pace had been too fast, and, alarmed over the probability of future scarcity, the operators figuring on a/rise lost sight of the present plenty. Because of the latter condition the speculators lacked the assistance of the millers and shippers, who on the eve of deliveries from the new crop were naturally desirous of awaiting the effect Upon the market of the early movement before buying more than was necessary for their immediate wants. There would appear to be no remedy for the shortage of spring wheat except such economy in its use as must come from higher prices. But it is not likely that speculation will do much more toward the application of this remedy until the test of experience from diminished supplies has been applied and shall give clearer indications than al present exist of their actual necessity. Unless the present information concerning the crops of Europe proves to be wrong, the importing nations will require as much wkcat from this side as they took during the crop year now about to close. That such a quantity can be supplied at any such prices commanded for the previous crop is out of the question. Corn hung in the balance between the influences es reported small reserves of old corn and a favorable week for the growing crop.
VON KETTELER CUT TO PIECES.
Brutal Butchery of the German Minister by Chinese. Official dispatches received by the consular body at Shanghai, a cablegram says, confirm in the fullest manner the
report of the butchery of Baron Von Kettteler, the German minister, June 18. The dor was riding in Legation street when he was attacked by Chinese troops and Boxers, dragged from his horse and killed. His body was hac k ed to pieces with

swords. The German legation and six other buildings were burned and a number of servants of the legations were killed and their bodies thrown into the flames. Official confirmation of this ghastly business has created the utmost consternation among the consuls general of the powers. The consuls entertato little hope that any foreigners are left alive in the capital. Two secret infperial decrees have fallen into the hands of foreigners, according to a special dispatch from Shanghai, which says the first, dated June 20, recites events around the capital, »nd attributes the trouble to religious fanaticism against Christians, leading to violent outbreaks which the Government is unable to suppress. Foreign troops are betwteen-Taku and Pekin, nnd the foreign relations have reached a desperate point. The Government, therefore, calls upon all the viceroys and governors to show their loyalty to the throne nnd to raise armies and funds in defense of Pekin nnd to detent foreign dictation. The second, which is dated Jupe 21, eulogizes the Boxers as loyal, true men, who, though not soldiers, have defeated the foreigners advancing on Pekin, nnd commands the officials to co-operate heartily in the patriotic work.
FILIPINOS KEEP ON FIGHTING.
Fifty Rebels Killer! in Numerons Battles They Started. A week’s scouting in northern Luzon resulted in fifty rebels being killed and forty wounded. One American was killed. Troops operating in North 1 locos burned six of the barracks belonging to Gen. Tino's forces and captured Tino’s correspondence. Gen. Tino with 200 of his men armed with rifles escaped. Near Manguiris the Americans attacked and defeated a large body of bolomen. At Angeles Gen. Aquino surrendered to Gen. Grant. At Turlac three officers and fifteen Filipinos armed with rifles surrendered to Lieut. Burns' scouts. At Pampango the rebels liberated a prisoner named Aiken, who was sick. He reports that Capt. Charles D. Roberts of the Thirty-fifth regiment is well. The Filipinos attacked the town of Bengued twice. The garrison succeeded in driving off the insurgents. The American Philippines commission is studying the approaching necessity for the substitution for army officers performing civil functions of civil service men, and has asked the Washington Government to semi- examiners to the Philippines to hold civil service examinations there at the same time as in the United States, with the idea of creating a Philippine civil service board. Prof. J. M. Stedman, professor of entomology in Missouri University, has been appointed by the board of curators of the institution to make a collection of entomological and other specimens for the university museum in southern Mexico. Cook Cox, Gray’s Village, Ky., killed John Engle. Quarreled over a horse trade. Patrick Oa'tens, Crescent Springs, Ky„ .was shot from ambush nnd fatally injured.
A LESSON IN MARKETING.
kt la Quite m Important to Know What to Buy as to Cook. , Good beef should be bright red when ft is first cut, and this red flesh should be well marbled with yellowish fat, [With a thick layer of fat on the outside. If it does not present this appearance you may be quite sure either that the ox was not well fatted, or (was too young, or was not in good condition. The flesh should be firm, and no mark should be left when it is pressed with the finger. The suet should be dry and crumble easily. The first step In demonstration is to cut the beef into the hind and fore quarters. The hind quarter contains the finest and most expensive cuts of the meat. Here are found the sirloin, the tenderloin, the rump and the round. The cheapest portions of the hind quarter are the shin and the flank. In the fore quarter are the ribs, the shoulder, the skin, the rattle round and the brisket. The ribs are the top of the back nearest to the loin; in fact, they join It when the animal is whole. The first ribs are what are called the “prime” ribs; these are used for roasts or steaks; the next are the five chuck ribs lying between the prime ribs and the neck; the meat is of a tougher quality than on the prime ribs, although they are used for the same purposes. The neck is used for beef teas, for stews and for boiling. Below the rib cuts, running along the side of the animal, is the rattle round. This is used for corning. The under part of the animal’s body is called the brisket, and this also is used for corning. The shoulder is used for steaks and corning, though the less said about the tenderness of a shoulder steak the better. The skin, both from the front and back, is used for soup and stock.—Woman’s Home Companion.
WHERE NEWS IS SCARCE.
A Colony Shut Off from the Outside W orld. For the first time in two years the little English colony on the Island of Tristan d’Acunha is to receive news of the outside world, says the Philadelphia Times. The Penguin recently took out an expedition to the neighboring Islands, and will call at Tristan with mails, parcels and such articles of luxury as charitable people felt inclined to send. The island used to be regularly visited by her majesty’s ships of war. But its position—between Africa and South America, fojty-five days’ steam from England—made the journey a very expensive one, especially now steam alone is used on cruisers. Sailing vessels, too, once made it a place of call; but the increase of steamships has robbed the island of this means of communication. So it comes about that 031y.,by a chance commercial venture shall we be able to obtain tidings of the little community.- ~ Small as the population is. it hast steadily growing. In 1817, when British garrison was withdrawn, poral Glass, his wife and family, and two other men were the only inhabitants left behind. In 182 C there were seven and two women. Recruited from various shipwrecks, these had increased in 1873 to eighty-four, but dwindled to sixty-four in 181)6, of whom the women considerably exceeded the men. One of the things most needed by the inhabitants is rat poison. The ordinary English rodent was acclimated there early in the century, probably by following his usual practice of deserting a sinking ship. Since then the tribe has thriven to such an extent that the cats (also English) instead of keeping down the rats, exist only on sufferance from the vermin.
The First Fire Company.
The Phoenix was the name of the first fire company in England, and it was established to 1682. At that time, in the towns, squirts or syringes were used for extinguishing fire, and their length did not exceed two or three feet, with pipes of leather. Water-tight seamless hose was first made In Bethnal Green in 1720.—Washington'Star.

An Old Saw that la Senseless.
In olden times when a person died it was customary to toll the church bell a ceftaln number of times to indicate whether it was a man, woman of child. For a woman it was tolled three times and for a man thrice three times. The stroke of a bell was called a"teller,” and hence it was nine tellers for a man; or, as folks said in those days, “Nine tellers mark a man.” This saying, which was continued long after the tolling custom was finally became converted into the present saying, “Nine tailors make a man,’’ which is devoid of both sense and reason.—Ladles’ Home Journal.

A Good Phase of Honesty.
She was a bright little woman, and when some one apologized for an occurrence at which she might have taken offense, she laughingly disclaimed ajiy such thought “I am honest you know and so I never pick up things that don’t belong to me, not even slights,” she said, merrily, "i don’t like them, anyway, nnd I hat* to be quite certain that one is intended for my use before I appropriate it.” So many people spend wearisome days and nights nursing grievances that they have only “picked up,’ and in brooding over slights which were never designed for them, that thia sort of honesty Is heartily to be commended.
