The Giffiord railroad meeting Thursday night was quite well attended. Mr. Gifford was present and stated his latest propositions. Briefly, as we understand them, they are as follows: If Barkley, Marion, Jordan and Carpenter will vote a two per cent, tax, which would raise something like $l3O, 000 to $150,000, he will run the road from Gifford, in Barkley tp., about direct south to Rensselaer and on the west half-section line to Remington, and secure his own right-of-way. If only the two former townships will vote the 2 per cent, he will come south to Rensselaer on this line and go south to Remington on the east half-sec-tion line for 1| per cent, bonus from Jordan and Carpenter and free right-of-way. If Barkley and Marion will not do this he wi 1 stick to his former proposition to run the line east and south of Rensslaer proper for the §30,000 and right-of-way. - As we understand the matter now, Marion tp., and Rennselaer must raise this S3O, 000 and secure right-of-way, and Jordan and Carpenter vote 1A per cent, tax for their share. The proposition some months ago was for only $12,000 and free right-of-waj’ to secure the road through to the south corporation line of Remington. Later this was raised to $30,000, and now it is $30,000 for Marion tp., and Rensselaer, with as much or more from Jordan and Carpenter.
