LOCAL MATTERS.
Rev. A. H. Zilmer is visiting in Nebraska. ' C. L. Thornton has moved to Chicago Heights. Two weeks from next Wednesday. is Decoration day. Ernest Fritts of Dunkirk, visited friends here this week. Wallace Robinson and family left for Lamar, Colo., last Friday. , Miss Lelia Middleton, is home from Indianapolis for the summer. Harry Wade of Hammond, visited friends here the first of the week. The unloaned school funds in Jasper county May 1 amounted to $3,431.. ‘ J. P. Sherman is looking after his lately acquired Kentucky lands this week. C. D. Nowels and family are visiting their son, Arthur Nowels, at Geneva, Ind. The Catholic people about Kniman are talking of building a ■ church at that place. The MedaryVille postoffice was robbed of about S4O worth of stamps Monday night. Sheriff Reed and family are visiting the former’s brother at Rantoul, 111., till's week. Gillam tp., democrats will hold their township convention Maj’ 26. See official call elsewhere. John Eck, Sr., and Chas. Dluzack of Carpenter tp., wore in Rensselaer Monday on business. The mortgage exemptions in this county for the present year number 755, against 640 last year. Henry and Andrew Ropp were called to Urbana, 0., last Friday, by the serious illness of their! mother. Wm. H. Randall of Barkley tp., has been appointed administrator of the estate of Nancy Jane Shaw, deceased. We are informed that the republican senatorial kickers have submitted their grievance to the state committee. J. W. Cowden has sold his farm just east of town, consisting of 158 acres, to a party from Francesville for S7O per acre. The first Chicago excursion of the season last Sunday, was fairly well patrohized, 132 tickett being sold from this station. Although a republican town, the entire democratic ticket was elected at Monon last Monday, by majorities ranging from 2 to 69. Mrs. Mattie Sharp and Mrs. Retta Sharp were called to Ohio, Tuesday, by the serious illness of their mother, who resides near Kenton. William and Frank Ringer, brothers, were killed by lightning near Winamac Monday night. The’horse they were driving was also killed. This section of the country was visited by quite a severe thunder storm Monday evening. Several head of stock was killed in various parts of the county. Bert Goff and Fred Parcels left for northern Michigan Sunday, where they have secured positions, thb former in a restaurant and the latter in a barber shop. The republicans elected their entire ticket at Wheatfield last Monday by from 12 to 23 ma jority. In town, the republicans outnumber the democrats two to one. Several oases of smallpox are reported in Starke county. There are a great many cases of smallpox in Indiana at the present time and no section of the state is free from the disease. Monticello democrats elected the town 1 treasurer last Monday, the republicans electing the balance of the ticket. Both city and town elections throughout the state have shown large democratic gains.
