VICTORY!
Democrats Elect the Mayor, City Marshal land One Councilman. A GOOD TICKET BROUGHT RESULTS. All Those Elected Will Serve For Four Years.—A Victory For the People.
The City election of last Tuesday was the warmest ever held in Rensselaer, aud the result was very gratifying to the democrats, also to a large number of republicans who laid aside partiznnship and voted for the man. While the victory was won under the democratic banner and the candidates who were elected on that ticket worked like beavers to bring about this happy result, much credit is due to those republicans who by their labor and votes so nobly assisted in the good work. The democrats bad out a good ticket and it was supported even beyond their fondest hopes. With a republican majority of 225 in the city (as shown from the poll) it looked almost impossible for a democrrt to win, and nothing but the popularity of the candidates and earnest work by all democrats and many of the more liberal-minded republicans carried the day and elected the mayor, marshal nnd one councilman by rousing majorities. A little more effort would also have elected three more of the council. • The vote was the largest ever cast here at a city election, being 654. The closest approach to this was in 1896, when it reached 487. The total vote cast this year by wards was Ist 190; 2nd 163; 3rd <,199. The city campaign was a very quiet one up to the day preceding tne election, and no fracases or harsh words were passed on either side bo far ns we know. The democratic candidates labored earnestly and used no money or unfair means, which fully justifies The Democrat’s position all along that with good clean tickets, honest and earnest work and clean official administrations the demo-
crats can win in Rensselaer and in Jasper county. All the candidates on the democratic ticket feel proud of their race and thank both their democratic and republican friends for the excellent support given th m; and those elected, we feel safe in saying, will let no official act of theirs cause them one pang of regret Following is the complete vote (official) by wards: „ l«t Id 3d Match Ward Ward Ward Total Maj.
