FOR SENDING POISONED CANDY.
Trial of Mies Viola Horlocker Begins at Hastings, Neb. The case of Miss Viola Horlocker, charged with attempting to kill Mrs. Charles F, Morey by poison, was called
for trial in the District Court at Hastings, Neb., Monday. The attorneys for the defense asked t ime in which to file an affidavit for continuance, setting up the facts that Mrs. Horlocker. mother of the accused, is very sick in New
York City, and that it is absolutely necessary that she be here at the trial. The attorneys for th«* prosecution resisted the application and it wap refused. April 10, 1899. a box of (toisoned l»n----bons was left at the studio door of Mrs. Charles F. Morey, and several persons ate of the candy anti were made very ill. Miss Viola Horlocker. a stenographer in the employ of Mr. Morey, was charged with the crime and arrested. It is claimed that the girl was infatuated with her employer. Miss Horlocker is highly connected and was a society leader as well as leader of All Saints’ Church choir. So far as is known the familiarity of the girl extended no further than frequent bicycle rides, in which Mrs. Morey occasionally joined.
