IN GENERAL.

Dispatches from Sagua la Grande, Cuba, report that'a tornado and cloudburst struck that town. Many houses were destroyed. In the city six persons were killed and nineteen injured. Fred W. Watkins, president of n department store nt Hamilton, Ont, lias assigned. His liabilities are not known, but will be heavy. Herron, Dickson & -Co. of Glasgow. Scotland, are creditors to the extent of $60,000. An Ashcroft, B. C.. report states that there was a big robbery at the Cariboo mine, near Quesneile Forks. The big safe in the Cariboo Hydraulic Company’s office was blown open and part of the amalgam, worth $50,000, stolen. Advices from Cape Nome, Alaska, brought by the steamer Lakme, are that typhoid fever has broken out in the camp in a severe form. The hospital is crowded. there now being 250 patients in it. There have been five deaths and others are expected. A general strike on the Great Northern has been threatened for some time and it looks now as if it may occur within n rosy few days. It will include conductors, engineers, firemen, brakemen and switchmen aad the men expect to tie the road up from end to end. The-district elections in Santo Domin~o resulted in favor of Gen. Juan Isidro Ji mines for president. Senor Vasqitez for vice president and Senor Rafael Abren and R. Castillo for congress. Congress will meet Nor. 10 and the new government will enter upon its duties Dec. 1-

Admiral Dewey's baggage, including all bis vouchers, is said to have been stolen. This is technically denied, but in spile of that everything indicates that the admirars belongings are missing. It is said the goods lost are valued at $lO,000 aad consist of mementoes and curios collected by the admiral. It is announced that the bridge combine under the name of the American Bridge Company has beenVompleted and will be in operation by the first of next month. The combine includes thirty-five of the thirty-seven plants in the country and is capitalized at $07,500,000, of which $33,000,000 is preferred and $34,500.000 common stock. It will control about 96 per cent of the pntput of the roattiT. The headquarters will be in New York City, The officials of the Colorado Midland Railway Company have discovered a case of ticket counterfeiting which promises to prove one of the most extensive ever discovered in this country. The ticket is so made tbat. with the coupon ayached. it can be made out to any point in the country and return. The tickets found have been all on Eastern points, and they were so nearly perfect that not only conductors, but employes in the general office passed them without question. Bradst reef’s says: ‘‘Touching the wheat situation it may be said that while present statistics of stocks of domestic and European wheat are bearish, estimates of the year’s crop continue to afford strength to the bulls’ position. An average of five leading Enropenn estimates points to a world’s crop this year not far from 2500.000,000 bushels, and a falling off of 325.000,000 to 375,000.000 bushels from last year is indicated. Corn is not as depressed as wheat, mainly because of lighter receipts. Wheat, including floor, shipments for the week aggregate 4.160,018 bushels, against 5,263.634 bushels last week and 4,282,778 bushels in the corresponding week of 1806. Corn exports aggregate 5,058,097 bushels, against 3.830,793 bushels last week and 2JV97.19L bushels in this Meek a year ago.”
