According to the estimates of the various county officers of Newton county, it will require $31,605.50 to run that county for the year 1900. The estimates of the Jasper county officers aggregate .over $62,500! Will any sane man believe for a moment that there should be this difference? In the estimates for gravel road repairs, as published, it will be observed that in free gravel roads, that is, those maintained at county expense, roads are mentioned only in Carpenter, Keener and Marion tps. Carpenter has only 6 miles of free gravel road, Keener has less than 5 miles now completed, while we believe Marion has only 17 miles. This makes an aggregate of about 28 miles. What has become of the 45 miles of free gravel road in Jasper county reported to the state officers for the fiscal year ending May 31, 1898? Has Jasper county a less number of miles of free gravel roads now than she had one year ago, or were the figures of 1898 juggled?
